Artist Teams Up With Star Names To Launch New Collection Combatting Racism In Football
Self-taught artist Hannah Nijsten is unveiling a new collection of paintings that has been championed by professional footballers looking to take a stand against racism in the UK.

Artist Hannah Nijsten’s inspiring new collection, Standing With You, has launched to great acclaim from professional footballers across the UK including current Aston Villa and England midfielder Ross Barkley and World Cup Golden Boot winning sensation Gary Lineker.
Footballers Andy Cole, Anton Ferdinand, Kieran Gibbs and Shaun Wright-Phillips have also pledged their support to Nijsten’s campaign, which is helping to kick racism out of the UK game.
Nijsten single-handedly built this inspiring project from the ground up but sought advice from some of the biggest names in the English game along the way. The Standing With You collection was created in 2020 with Nijsten collaborating with each of the players during their downtime, all of whom were passionate and eager to be involved.
The collection, which closely involved the football stars, is making a stand against racism within football in the UK, where we so regularly hear of racial abuse and follows many Premier League players’ decision to take a knee before kick-off in a solidified stance against racism.
The collection itself focuses on using a play of opacities, transparencies and ridges of black paint, collectively combined to evoke emotion. As an artist, Nijsten is known for her textures and creating art that you would want to touch.
Similar to art legend Pierre Soulages, she is captivated by the way that light can be captured by black paint and focuses on creating paintings of light using such techniques.
Through the Standing With You collection, Nijsten speaks to the power of people coming together to make a positive change, just as footballers and people across the country have done in the past year, setting the example that racism will not be tolerated anywhere within society.
To raise money for charity, Nijsten has created a limited edition print series from which a percentage of sales will go to The Black Heart Foundation.
The footballers involved in the project proudly received their own original Hannah Nijsten painting to exhibit within their homes, with some requesting she create further pieces on a commission basis.
Nijsten is passionate about standing up against racism within the sport; she commented:
“I just want to inspire people to stand up and speak up because it really can make a difference for the players and their future generations on and off the pitch.”
