As IVC Filter Lawsuit Numbers Mount, Study Finds No Survival Benefit For Patients Using IVC Filters

June 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent study published by Medscape concerning the benefits of using IVC filters. The study found that Inferior Vena Cava filter placement does not result in a survival benefit for trauma patients. The study used data from the state of Michigan to examine usage rates for IVC filters and overall mortality in adult trauma patients who had an Injury Severity Score of greater than 9 and a hospital stay of more than 3 days.

This study brings to light the frequently questioned benefits of IVC filter use, amid growing concerns about the device’s effectiveness. The devices, which are designed to catch blood clots before they reach the lungs, have been reported to break apart inside the body and migrate to other locations. The migration or breakage can sometimes cause serious side effects, which many patients feel they were not adequately warned about.

Patients that have suffered serious adverse events because of the insertion of an IVC filter in many cases have filed lawsuits against manufacturers such as C.R. Bard and Cook Medical. The cases allege that despite knowing about the faulty design of the IVC filters, manufacturers continued to market them. These lawsuits claim not only that the devices caused serious adverse side effects but that the manufacturing companies should be held responsible. Cases have been consolidated in MDLs in the Southern District of Indiana and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
