As IVC Filters Lawsuit Numbers Climb, A Look At An Effective Technique For Removal: Laser Sheath Tissue Ablation

June 22, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a method for removing IVC filters when they have become embedded in organs. The laser sheath tissue ablation method has been used to remove IVC filters when standard procedures for removal will not work. According to Northwestern Medicine, filters can get embedded into organs when they have been in place for an extended period of time. Using the laser treatment, however, these filters can be removed in situations where they previously could not. The laser is found inside a sheath or small tube that is placed inside the inferior vena cava and up to the filter. The laser is then able to ablate the scar tissue attached to the filter allowing us to separate it from the IVC, collapse the filter into the sheath, and remove it, Northwestern said.

This is good news for many patients who have undergone treatment with IVC filters and suffered from the effects of filter embedment. According to the FDA, 921 adverse events were reported involving IVC filters between 2005 and 2010. These events include device migration, filter fracture, and embolization. Many patients who have suffered from these complications have filed lawsuits against manufacturers including Cook Medical and C.R. Bard claiming that in addition to the dangerous side effects, the companies were aware of the issues and didn’t stop them from going to market. Hundreds of these cases have now accumulated and have been combined into MDLs in Arizona and Indiana.

Banville Law has years of experience fighting large pharmaceutical companies who have marketed dangerous drugs or devices and are currently looking to assist those affected. The firm is working to ensure that those individuals who believe they have been affected by the use of these filters are given the important opportunity to explore their legal rights. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to significant financial compensation.
