As Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Build, Disagreement Over Talcum Death In Ireland Continues
October 28, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by IT News about a disagreement over a woman’s cause of death.
The article suggests that a top respiratory consultant has said people should not be alarmed by the findings of a Dublin inquest earlier in the week, which linked the death of a woman to the ingestion of talcum powder. The professional called the woman’s death “unusual” and that while inhaling talcum can cause injuries, it usually only occurs when the talcum is inhaled at very high levels.
Meanwhile, women in the U.S. continue to express concerns about the dangers of talcum powder for other reasons. Thousands of women have filed lawsuits against companies such as Johnson & Johnson claiming that, when used for feminine hygiene, the company’s baby powder and Shower-to-Shower products can cause ovarian cancer. Though research has been conflicting on the link between the two, Johnson & Johnson adamantly denies any connection and insists on the products’ safety.
The first talcum powder lawsuit was filed in 2009 by a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The woman, who is a physician assistant, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 when she was 49 years old, according to an article by Huffington Post. The plaintiff filed the complaint claiming Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for gross negligence and fraud. Though a jury confirmed the association between cancer and talcum powder, the plaintiff was offered no compensatory damages. The company has, however, been made to pay two large settlements after juries ruled in favor of the plaintiffs.
