Attorney Comments On Oscars Performance And Statement On Sexual Assault By VP Joe Biden
February 29, 2016 – – AbuseGuardian.com reports on the Oscars performance by Lady Gaga of “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground” which showed support to victims of sexual assault. Gaga co-wrote the Oscar-nominated song with Diane Warren for the documentary, which addresses the rising issue of sexual assault on college campuses, and was joined onstage by a large group of survivors, creating a deeply moving performance.
The 88th Oscars shed light on sexual assault survivors in many ways Sunday night, urging everyone to become part of a solution to the growing problem. Vice President Joe Biden took the stage to introduce Lady Gaga and to encourage viewers to “take the pledge.” He was speaking of the pledge to “intervene in a situation where consent has not or cannot be given,” a part of the ‘It’s On Us’ campaign launched by the White House in 2014 to end sexual assault on campuses.
Lady Gaga, a survivor of sexual assault herself, followed the Vice President, singing the first part of the emotionally charged song before a group of 50 survivors joined her onstage. Each sexual assault survivor had a message written on their arm, such as “It Happened To Me,” “Survivor,” and “Unbreakable,” and joined hands at the end of the performance, which received a standing ovation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the song will benefit organizations which support sexual assault survivors.
The night continued by highlighting survivors several more times. Brie Larson won Best Actress for her role in “Room,” in which she portrayed a victim of sexual assault who was held captive for years with her son. Larson hugged each survivor as they walked off stage after the moving performance. Finally, the Oscar for Best Picture was awarded to the movie “Spotlight,” which focused on the Boston Globe investigative reporting team that discovered the sexual abuse by Catholic Church priests, and brought public awareness to the scandal. Producers of the movie were able to use the award season media to bring light to the platform and screened the movie for abuse survivors multiple times prior to the awards ceremony.
Brian Kent, Esq. of the firm Laffey Bucci & Kent understands the devastation sexual assault can cause victims. He comments on the Oscars performance and the spotlight that sexual assault survivors took, stating: “Sexual abuse shouldn’t happen and it isn’t acceptable. Every victim should know that is wasn’t their fault. Recovering from such trauma is a difficult and long road, and victims need the support of advocates who work in their best interests. It is our responsibility as a society to work collectively to prevent these crimes from occurring, and the Oscars provided a very inspirational example of this, which helped to remind the public of our responsibilities, and to rightfully empower many of those who have been hurt .” Kent and his firm sponsor the online resource website AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
