Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) announced today that Attorney Karen Akiens received her Board Certification in Tax Law. Karen Akiens currently practices in The Woodlands, Harris County, Texas where she is partner in the law firm of Riddle & Akiens, LLP. In addition to now being Board Certified in Tax Law, Karen is also Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate.
Attorney Karen Akiens is a 1997 graduate of Temple University school of law. Karen has been a partner in the law firm of Riddle & Akiens, LLP since 2008 and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas in 2003. Before moving to Texas, Karen worked as an attorney in Philadelphia, PA.
Board Certification is a voluntary designation program governed by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS). A TBLS certification is authorized by the Supreme Court of Texas. The TBLS certifies Texas attorneys in 22 specific areas of law. Board Certified attorneys must be licensed for at least five years, devote a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years, attend continuing education seminars, pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges and pass a 6-hour written examination.
Board Certification is valid for five years. To remain certified attorneys and paralegals must apply for recertification every five years and meet substantial involvement, peer review and continuing legal education requirements for their specialty area. “This program is important for the public and for attorneys in our state. We’re focused on enhancing the quality of legal representation in an increasingly competitive marketplace. I’ve been involved with this program for more than 30 years and am continually impressed with TBLS members’ accomplishments,” said David Dickson, Chairman of the TBLS Board of Directors.
Karen Akiens received her JD and MBA in May 1997, her Master of Law in Tax (LLM) in May 1998 and her Estate Planning Certificate in January 1999 from Temple University School of Law and School of Business in Philadelphia. Karen is Board Certified in Probate and Estate Planning by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. She practiced as an attorney in Philadelphia before moving to Houston in 1999. Karen received a license to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Texas. She limits her practice to the following areas: asset protection, estate and gift tax planning, business planning, probate, and taxation, and she manages the firm’s estate planning, probate, and corporate departments.
