“Friday, March 16, World Sleep Day is a little reminder for those who are battling obesity to try to get some much-needed shut-eye,” said Beato.

A study published last year found that children who slept longer had lower Body Mass Index (BMI) scores than those who slept less. A UK study which looked at the effect of sleep deprivation in adults also found that the waist measurements of people who slept on average six hours per night were three centimeters higher than those who slept nine hours a night.

Other than obesity, Beato noted that health risks of getting enough sleep also includes Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and gestational diabetes.

World Sleep Day is an annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects, and driving. It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) and aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.
