North Texas Teens Team Up To Help Children Battling Cancer

Dallas, 12/09/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Heroes for Children (HFC) – a unique nonprofit that provides financial and social assistance to families with a child battling cancer – is pleased to announce the addition of its Teen Board. The Teen Board was created to offer unique opportunities for teens to get involved in the community and provide support to Heroes for Children and the families they serve. Members consist of teens in grades 7-12, who will support Heroes for Children’s services and fundraising efforts to strengthen and expand the financial, social and emotional assistance provided to families with children battling childhood cancer.

“Heroes for Children is an organization that means a lot to my family,” said Carter Weinstein. “I have attended many programs with my parents over the years, which have helped families in Texas who have a child battling cancer. A couple of years ago, a good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer, and I now know (more than ever) how important support for these families is. This past summer, Larissa Linton and Jenny Dowen, the founders of Heroes for Children, supported me in the launch of a Heroes for Children Teen Board. I knew it would mean a lot to my friend that kids wanted to help other kids like him.”

The HFC Teen Board offers unique programs that allow volunteers opportunities to roll up their sleeves and get involved. The board is currently working on Holiday Heroes, where five teams of teens will shop and wrap holiday gifts for HFC families. In just a short period of time, the board has amassed 75 teen members from schools all over the Dallas metroplex – including 12-year-old Sunny Malouf, who is using her talents as a singer/songwriter to give back to Heroes for Children. She recently announced that a portion of the proceeds from her new song “Superhero” will benefit the “superheroes” she met while touring the country as part of DigiTour.

“I’m really excited to play a part in Heroes for Children’s new teen board,” said Malouf. “Children’s cancer affects so many families and I’m happy that I can work together with other kids my age to give back to those in our community who need our support this holiday season and throughout the year.” Sunny Malouf will perform at the Dallas Holiday Heroes event slated for Sunday, Dec. 11, at McKesson Corporation in Carrollton.

In addition to providing support to Holiday Heroes, the Teen Board has also launched three unique programs: a hospital care package program where volunteers will deliver necessities and games to newly diagnosed/admitted children, a room décor program where volunteers will shop for and deliver room decorations for patients who will be in the hospital for extended periods of time, and a hospital visitation program where older teens will play with admitted children in the hospital playroom.

In early 2017, the Teen Board hopes to establish an HFC School Ambassadors program with the goal to double membership next year. The ambassadors will work with community service coordinators in their schools to bring awareness to HFC and invite other kids to get involved.

“It is amazing how many kids have come out from all over the city to get involved in such a short period of time,” Weinstein added. “We have 7th-12th graders from both public and private schools. The HFC Teen Board is not only a great way to give back but to meet other kids who have the same interests. It’s an awesome group, and I can’t wait to watch the good we can do – snowball!”

There is no minimum number of hours required to join the teen board. A teen can sign up for one or more programs depending upon their schedule. Programs take place throughout the year so there are many opportunities to jump into (or out of) a program as schedules change. Teens can submit their HFC Teen Board hours to their schools for community service requirements. Teens in grades 7-12 can sign up online at http://heroesforchildren.org/teen-board/ for $25.

Local Podcast Celebrity Ready to Give Back to Anaheim’s Homeless

Dallas, 12/08/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Revenue Chat’s Tony DUrso Plans Christmas Eve Breakfast

Tony DUrso, prominent host of the weekly podcast series Revenue Chat, is planning to give back to some of the neediest residents of his hometown of Anaheim. With the help of several other friends and organizations, DUrso is organizing an event, “Breakfast with Our Neighbors,” set for Saturday, Dec. 24, from 9-11 a.m.

“This event is designed to bring attention to a growing problem right here in our own backyard,” stated DUrso. “The Santa Ana River Trail has become a flashpoint for homelessness, and it needs to be addressed. We hope our small gesture of goodwill will lead to addressing a more suitable solution for some of the most vulnerable in our community. Nobody should have to live like this.”

Charitable goodwill is nothing new to DUrso. During the holiday season, DUrso typically purchases toys to pass out to children in homeless shelters and hospitals. But this year, he has something even bigger in mind. With approximately 500 people living in temporary shelters between Orangewood and Chapman Avenues, the homeless issue is playing out right in the shadows of the Big A, Anaheim Angels baseball stadium.

During the Breakfast with Our Neighbors event, DUrso – aided by local volunteers from Thrivent’s Action Team and Passion, a group dedicated to homelessness issues, will be providing food, drinks, hot coffee, clothing and blankets. In the lead up to the Christmas Eve event, DUrso is looking for additional pledged support and volunteers. Interested parties may get involved by contacting Tony DUrso directly or sending a PayPal donation to: breakfast@tonydurso.com.

“Anaheim is our community, and we need to make a decision about what kind of stewards we intend to be,” DUrso noted. “This is an ambitious attempt that began with just one man’s decision. What would be possible if we all took on a similar initiative to help?”

For more information on the Breakfast with Our Neighbors event, please visit Tony DUrso’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tonysdurso.

Ask Questions To Find The Right Nursing Home Says Boca Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 12/08/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

If you’re in the difficult position of having to put a loved one in the care of a nursing home or assisted living facility you need to do the best you can to find the right place. Though instances of abuse and neglect in nursing homes and assisted living are not uncommon, most residents are cared for and treated appropriately. Boca nursing home abuse attorney Joe Osborne says you need to check out facilities yourself to see for yourself which one would be a good match for your family member.

AARP has suggestions for what to look for and questions to ask at nursing homes when you visit them.

·       What does the food look and taste like? Do the meals meet dietary requirements? Do they taste good? Visually appealing? Malnutrition is a major problem for nursing home residents and if the food’s not appealing residents may not eat and lose weight.

·       What sounds do you hear? Hearing someone moaning or yelling “help” is rarely a sign of poor treatment. It’s more likely the result of dementia. You should listen for how staff addresses residents. Staff should address residents by their names, not “Mama” or “Grandpa.” Residents need to feel respected. If music is playing does it sound like it’s for the benefit of staff or residents?

·       What does it smell like? Some bad smells are inevitable. Some medications and diets can make residents gassy. Elderly residents are more likely to lose bladder and bowel control. But if the facility reeks of stale urine, it could be a sign that the facility is not cleaned properly.

·       Is the staff overworked? Ask the staff if they work a lot of overtime and double shifts. If so, that’s an indication the staff is running short and stressed out which can impact patient care. Ask for the facility’s staffing ratios and see if how they compare to others on the Nursing Home Compare tool at Medicare.gov.

·       How are residents spending their afternoons? A crowd of residents circling the nurses’ station or watching people come and go through the front door can be a good sign because they’re not stuck in their rooms, alone, watching TV. A good nursing home will have a calendar of activities for residents.

·       How does the staff interact with each other? Listen to what the staff is saying to each other. Are they rude? If so they’ll probably be rude to residents. Does the staff spend more time chatting with each other or with residents? The more interaction with residents the better.

·       Do you see bruising? Though not necessarily a sign of abuse they shouldn’t be ignored. A finger-shaped bruise on an upper arm is very suspicious as are handprint-shaped marks on the face or stomach or bruises on the back, which could be caused by falls.

·       How does the facility handle a fall? Falls can happen even in the best nursing homes but the difference is how the staff reacts to one. Is the person checked for injuries? Will they safely get the person off the floor? Was the person checked later for injuries that didn’t appear at first? Are family members notified of falls? They should be.

If you need to find a nursing home or assisted living facility for a loved one do your homework, visit the facility and make the best decision you can. If your trust is misplaced and despite your efforts your family member is abused or neglected, don’t blame yourself. It’s the facility and its staff that’s responsible says nursing home negligence lawyer Osborne.

If you have questions about nursing home or assisted living facility neglect or abuse in the South Florida area, contact Boca nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. Boca Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer Joe Osborne – ER’s May Under Diagnose Elder Abuse

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 12/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

About 10% of the elderly may be suffering abuse and that has far-reaching negative effects on their physical and mental health. Victims living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities may have their routine medical care ignored so they may not get appropriate medical care until they’re sent to the local hospital emergency department. Boca nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne says hospital personnel need to be alert to signs of abuse of the elderly.

There are an estimated more than 23 million emergency department visits by older adults every year, according to Science Daily. Emergency departments can identify elder abuse and intervene to ensure patient safety and address unmet care needs, adds nursing home neglect attorney Osborne

In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society researchers used a nationally-representative dataset to estimate how often emergency providers make a formal diagnosis of elder abuse. Their answer is one in 7,700 visits, which may be far fewer than it should be.

The vast majority of victims of elder abuse pass through the emergency department (ED) without the problem being identified, according to one study author, Timothy Platts-Mills, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and co-director of the division of geriatric emergency medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and senior author of the study. He says, “For elder abuse, ED’s across the country are falling short.”

Platts-Mills admits that identifying elder abuse isn’t always easy.

Older adults who may be physically frail, suffer dementia or psychiatric conditions and are vulnerable to injuries and may have difficulty caring for themselves.

It can be difficult distinguishing whether a bruise is from a fall or physical abuse, or whether poor hygiene is due to a person asking to be left alone or the result of neglect by a care provider.

“But those difficulties don’t change the reality that elder abuse is common, takes a tremendous toll on its victims, and is frequently missed,” Platts-Mills says.

The goal of the research is to help emergency departments better identify elderly abuse.

Study authors plan to develop and validate a screening tool designed for emergency departments.

Currently most emergency departments just ask a single question about safety at home at the time of triage of an elderly patient.

This new tool will cover several questions to ask about different aspects of elder abuse and neglect. It will also include a physical exam for patients with significant cognitive impairment.

Victims of nursing home and assisted living facility abuse and neglect are often at the mercy of staff who don’t have the resources to properly care for them, are indifferent to their needs or are intentionally doing them harm. When the resident’s health deteriorates enough the emergency department may be their last hope to discover the problems and alert family members to what is going on. These emergency department nurses and doctors must do a better job to help these residents at a time when they need help the most says personal injury attorney Osborne.

Study Finds Outdoor Air Pollution Kills More Than 5 Million People Every Year

Riverdale, NJ, 12/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

A recent study presented at the 2016 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has found that as many as 5.5 million people die every year as a result of outdoor air pollution, highlighting the urgent need for industrial air filtration to clean indoor air.

What’s even more troubling is that more than half of those who die each year from outdoor air pollution live in China and India, which not coincidentally, happen to be the two fastest growing economies in the world.

“Air pollution is the fourth highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease,” stated Michael Brauer, a Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Population and Public Health in Vancouver, Canada. “Reducing air pollution is an incredibly efficient way to improve the health of a population.”

And as giant industrialized countries such as China and India begin to grapple with the issue of poor air quality, researchers at the AAAS meeting said that even with an effort to reduce emissions, the death toll from outdoor pollution will rise in the next 20 years.

Some Common Causes of Bad Outdoor Air

Outdoor air pollution is an intractable healthcare problem that resists easy solutions.

As large countries such as China and India continue to accelerate their industrial development, they also increase the sources of air pollution that are creating a haze of smog over their largest cities.

Researchers have pointed to industrial manufacturing, power plants, and coal-burning factories as the most common source of air pollution in urban areas.

These processes release particles into the air that are inhalable, and that can cause a number of breathing problems, including asthma.

Not surprisingly, particulate matter – also known as PM – is the most prevalent contaminant in most cities that are plagued with bad air pollution.

PM is a mix of solids and liquid drops, and includes particles such as dirt, soot, dust and smoke that can be seen with the naked eye, and other particles that are so small only a microscope can detect their presence.

PM typically forms in the upper atmosphere, and occurs from a reaction between chemicals that include sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

Educational Efforts to Spread the Word About PM

In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created a website known as “AirNow,” which lets citizens check the Air Quality Index (AQI) every day.

The AQI is a measure of the cleanliness level of outdoor air, and also includes information about possible health effects based on the AQI level recorded that day.

In addition, the EPA has initiated a flagship Air Quality Flag Program to help schools, community organizations and air quality agencies understand how to know when outdoor air is too polluted for recreational activity.

And as part of its effort to lower air pollution, the EPA requires industrial companies to adhere to the tenets of The Clean Air Act, which sets standards for the amount of pollution that a facility can generate.

There are six common contaminants named in The Clean Air Act, including particulate matter, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide.

Industrial Filtration Offers Some Answers

Outdoor air pollution has a detrimental effect on indoor air quality, which poses just as many health risks.

But unlike outdoor air pollution, which is not subject to filtration devices, indoor air quality can be improved through the use of industrial air filtration systems.

Industrial air filtration is applicable to labs, data centers, hospitals, power plants, factories and other sites where outdoor pollution creates poor indoor air.

Industrial air filtration systems can be added to ductwork that is already installed at a facility, but are also available in mobile units that can be placed in a variety of locations for optimal air cleansing.

Camfil Leads the Way

For more than 50 years, Camfil has been providing the most technologically advanced industrial air filtration systems. Camfil offers the most efficient industrial filtration systems to clients throughout the world, and has built its reputation on providing quality on a budget. Camfil operates under the guiding principle that clean air is the right of all humans no matter where they live. The company is well equipped to offer clean-air solutions to any facility that seeks to improve its indoor air quality, and the overall health of its employees.

Truckers Face Tough Penalties For Distracted Driving

Philadelphia, 12/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Tractor-trailer operators have demanding jobs that require them to stay on the road for days and even weeks at a time. Without long-haul truckers, much of the goods consumers rely on would never make it to store shelves. Most truck drivers are professionals who take their jobs very seriously. They follow the rules and make safety a top priority.

However, it takes just one irresponsible truck driver to cause a serious accident. When truck drivers glance at a text or worry more about looking at their Facebook page than paying attention to the road, people can get hurt and even killed. Because semis are so dangerous, the federal government has put strict laws in place to restrict truck drivers from driving distracted.

Three Types of Distracted Driving

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distracted driving can be broken down into three types.

Visual. When a truck driver’s eyes are off the road, this is a visual distraction.

Manual. Any time a trucker’s hands are off the wheel or the truck’s controls, the truck driver is engaged in a manual distraction.

Cognitive. Cognitive distractions include any activity that takes a truck operator’s mind off the task of driving.

Because texting and other kinds of cell phone use often involve all three types of distractions, these activities are particularly dangerous. As a result, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has laws in place that penalize truck drivers for doing any of the following:

Holding a cell phone to initiate a phone call
Dialing numbers on a cell phone
Reaching for a cell phone if it causes a truck driver to move out of a seated position
Texting behind the wheel
Reading a cell phone screen or any mobile device while driving
Typing on a cell phone or mobile device while driving

According to the FMCSA, truck operators who text and drive are 23 times more likely to cause a catastrophic accident compared to truckers who don’t text behind the wheel.

Serious Penalties for Truck Drivers Who Drive Distracted

Truck operators who violate the distracted driving ban face serious penalties. Operators caught texting and driving can be fined $2,750 for each violation. For commercial carriers, the fines can be as high as $11,000 each time a carrier’s driver is caught breaking the rules.

Eberstein Witherite Announces Sponsorship of the 66th Annual Sandra Meadows Classic Basketball Tournament

Eberstein Witherite LLP 1800 Car Wreck Fort Worth, 12/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 66th Annual Sandra Meadows Classic Basketball Tournament, which will be held December 28 through December 30th at the Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena in Duncanville.

“We really want to be a positive presence in our community,” stated Amy Witherite, founding partner of Eberstein Witherite. “And this is one of the biggest girls varsity basketball tournaments in the country. Our firm is proud to sponsor this event that will bring 28 of the finest teams from Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and California to see who is good enough to wear the champion’s crown.”

The event was first held in 1951, and is considered one of the top regional girls basketball tournaments. It is named after the late Sandra Meadows, a legendary girls basketball coach who took over the Duncanville High School program in 1968 and won four state championships during her long tenure.

Meadows’ teams also won 134 consecutive games between December 20, 1987 and March 1, 1991, a Texas record and the second longest winning streak in the nation. Meadows-coached teams won 906 games and only lost 207 times during her coaching career. The successful coach was not only known for her victories, but also for the way in which she taught her players life lessons such as doing things the right way, never giving up and believing anything was possible through hard work. Meadows was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.

“Coach Meadows was a great influence in my life,” stated Shelly Greco, personal injury attorney at Eberstein Witherite. “She wasn’t just a basketball coach, she was a mentor and a second mother to many of the players on her teams. She was a teacher of life and how to go about doing things in a way that you could be proud of no matter what the outcome. She was more concerned with building leaders and good people than winning games, but she did both with outstanding success.”

The Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena is home to the Duncanville Pantherettes who have won the tournament nine times in the past 16 years, and are the reigning 2016 Girls 6A State Champions under Coach Cathy Self-Morgan. The 2,000-seat arena is designed like a college venue with carpet in the locker rooms, a press table and a control booth.

Dallas Federal Criminal Lawyers Says – Hacking Potentially Costly for Retailers

Dallas, 12/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

As the 2016 holiday shopping season gets underway, cybersecurity firms warn that hackers could cost retailers big and small millions of dollars. According to a Fortune report, hackers have the power to not only steal consumer data, but to take down entire sites—costing major retailers as well as smaller stores big profits.

For example, a site like Amazon, which sold 398 items per second over the summer, could potentially lose $2 million in sales every 10 minutes if hackers were successful in taking the site down.

This is an understandably terrifying prospect for store owners who increasingly depend on online sales to make profits. In October 2016, a hacking attack cut off customers’ access to Netflix and Kayak. Both companies made no sales while their sites were down.

Internet security experts say that hackers are also developing new tools to carry out their hacks. For example, “mega” attacks now use botnets to pummel a site with junk web traffic, overloading it and knocking it offline. Major sites like Amazon tend to have technology in place to fight off these types of attacks, but smaller shops are vulnerable. Small- and medium-size retailers can also fall victim to hackers that attempt to hold them hostage by demanding money in exchange for hackers backing off their sites.

Staying Safe as You Shop Online

With about 59 percent of holiday shoppers saying they plan on purchasing gifts online, cyber security experts say everyone should be cautious about providing information to online sites. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Avoid simple passwords. Most people use simple or straightforward passwords, such as their birthdate or a pet’s name. However, easy passwords leave you vulnerable online, especially if you use the same password across several sites. Create a password that is a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. You should also avoid using dates and words associated with your personal information. According to an Investopedia report, hackers quickly learn to exploit weak passwords.
Don’t store your passwords online. Storing your passwords on a spreadsheet on your computer is a bit like keeping your savings account in a coffee can on your front porch. Don’t leave a back door open for cyber thieves. Instead, opt for a low-tech approach, such as keeping a handwritten list of your passwords in a drawer in your kitchen.
Avoid risky sites. Don’t visit websites that put you at risk of a hacking attack or cyber threat. For example, music or file-sharing torrent sites are notorious for spreading viruses and giving cyber thieves easy access to your information. You should also avoid clicking on links sent to you via email. For example, if your bank sends you an email about your account, log out of your email and go directly to the bank’s website before logging in. Reputable companies generally don’t ask customers to log in via email, so be wary of any email that asks you to access a site from a link.
