How Hospital Air Filtration Can Combat the Three Causes of Poor Air Quality

Riverdale, NJ, 11/10/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Air filtration may hold the key to alleviating the problem of poor air quality in many hospitals

Despite the fact that hospitals are meant to be places of healing and wellness, multiple studies have shown that the air quality inside many healthcare facilities is poor, which may require hospital administrators to implement an air filtration strategy to combat the problem.

Read our latest blog: http://newsreleases.submitpressrelease123.com/2016/05/16/hospital-workers-compensation-claim-dismissed-following-air-quality-improvement/

The very purpose of a hospital necessitates that it maintain a high level of cleanliness to promote the healing of patients, especially those in critical care units. But until hospital administrators and hospital staff understand the causes of poor air quality, they will not be able to address this issue and purchase the air filtration system that best matches their needs.

With that in mind, the following three causes have been commonly identified as major contributing factors to poor air quality inside hospitals:

Patients

Patients at healthcare facilities are there for a variety of reasons, but they can also be one of the main reasons that the air quality is less than ideal. Sick patients – especially those who have contracted respiratory diseases – are often stricken with coughs, which can contaminate the air and surfaces within a hospital room or lab. This contamination can adversely affect the indoor air quality, but it doesn’t just stop there.

Some patients who have open wounds or infections can transfer viruses and bacteria from their bodies onto surfaces such as bedpans, mugs, plates and silverware. They can also contaminate drapes, curtains, shutters, clothing and bedding, and once these materials are disturbed, those contaminants become airborne.

Hospital Construction

Many public hospitals in large urban areas were constructed in years ago, when the innovations in ducts and vents were not as highly advanced as they have become in modern times. As a result, the air that is drawn into the hospital may not be properly filtered through ductwork that has not been updated in several decades. That means that common pollutants such as dust mites, dirt, pollen and airborne bacteria more readily circulates through the vents in the hospital.

And that’s not even taking into account, ductwork and pipes that may be the source of leaks over a long period of time. Moisture is a particular problem in ductwork, because it often leads to problems such as mold and spores that can grow into a major health issue, beyond just compromised air quality.

External Air Quality

Much of the air that circulates through a hospital is drawn in from the outside. That means that indoor air quality in many health facilities is largely dependent on the quality of the outside air. This was never more evident that in a December 2015 incident at Beijing’s Children’s Hospital, in which the pollution index inside one of the wards climbed to 440, which is 20 times higher than the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The poor air quality inside the hospital was a direct result of a red-alert air pollution event in which the city was forced to close schools and factories because heavy smog led to an astounding pollution index of 900.

Poor indoor air quality in a hospital that results from adverse conditions outside, can compromise the health of patients who trust that health care facilities are a safe haven from anything that could make their symptoms worse.

The Need for Air Filtration in Hospitals

There’s an unwritten covenant that patients make when they visit a hospital for treatment: “Don’t do anything to make me worse.” And yet, many hospitals throughout the world violate that covenant with air quality that poses a significant threat to the well-being of patients.

Air filtration is not a luxury in these instances, it’s an absolute necessity. Hospitals must be the last bastion of cleanliness and health, a goal that is not achievable without a filtration system that is effective at removing even the smallest pollutants from the air.

Camfil Meets That Need

For more than 50 years, Camfil has been an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of air filtration systems that are innovative, functional and health affirming. Camfil places a high value on the efficiency of its products, and through rigid testing, has developed solutions to the most complex clean-air problems facing the world. But that efficiency has not come at the expense of affordability, which is why no other hospital HVAC air filtration company can match the value that Camfil offers.

Big Truck Wreck Lawyers of 1800 Truck Wreck Update on Greyhound Bus Crash

Dallas, 11/10/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Big Truck Wreck Lawyers  of  1800 Truck Wreck state that a  recent string of Greyhound crashes shows that these commercial vehicles can cause as much damage as big truck accidents.

The Texas big truck accident lawyers at 1800 Truck Wreck are reporting on a large commercial vehicle accident involving a Greyhound bus in Fort Worth that killed a passenger in an SUV, and has now resulted in a lawsuit against Greyhound.

The family of the woman who was killed in the commercial vehicle accident has filed suit against Greyhound Bus Lines and the driver for more than $1 million.

The accident occurred on Interstate 30 in Arlington.

In the early morning hours, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Jonathan Moore was traveling westbound on the freeway.

Torii Davis, 28, was a passenger in the SUV.

For reasons that have not been fully disclosed, Moore lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a concrete barrier that served as a carpool lane divider, separating the HOV lane from the main lanes.

Prior to the crash, witnesses described the SUV as weaving through traffic in an erratic manner.

After impact, the Ford Explorer came to a stop under the Collins Street Bridge.

Moments later, a Greyhound bus carrying 40 passengers smashed into the SUV, killing Davis and injuring Moore.

Davis died at the scene, and Moore was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Sixteen passengers aboard the bus were also injured, though none of those injuries were life threatening.

Lawsuit Details

Less than a week after the commercial vehicle accident, Doris Edwards – Davis’ mother – filed the lawsuit on behalf of herself and Davis’ 5-year-old daughter.

The suit contends that Larry Sampson, the driver of the Greyhound bus, “failed to operate his vehicle at a safe speed.”

Furthermore, the suit said that Sampson used “faulty evasive action at the time of the collision,” which directly led to the devastating wreck.

Sampson is also accused of failing to pay attention to traffic, and failing to properly respond to hazard signals on the road.

The suit also names Moore as a defendant, alleging that his negligence was a contributing factor to the first crash that caused the SUV to become disabled.

Moore was described as “incompetent and unfit to safely operate a motor vehicle” at the time of the accident, and that his “negligent conduct was more than momentary thoughtlessness or inadvertence, and constituted gross negligence.”

Part of the issue is that Davis was first injured in the initial crash when the SUV struck the divider, which caused her “horrible physical pain, suffering and mental anguish.”

According to language in the suit, Sampson is directly responsible for Moore’s trauma in the moments between the first accident and the second accident that caused her death.

Another Recent Greyhound Lawsuit

The legal action in the commercial bus accident is only one of several recent lawsuits filed against Greyhound Lines.

Earlier this year, a Cuyahoga County, OH jury awarded $27 million to Mark Soberay, 44 at the time of the crash, who was injured in a 2013 accident involving a Greyhound Bus.

The crash occurred early in the morning as a Greyhound bus headed for Cleveland, was traveling west on Interstate 80 in Union County in Central Pennsylvania.

The bus smashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that was hauling garbage.

Forty passengers suffered injuries, and one passenger was killed in the accident.

The Greyhound driver – Sabrina Anderson – suffered minor injuries, but the driver of the commercial truck was not hurt.

Soberay had his right leg amputated as result of the accident.

He also endured more than 30 surgical procedures to repair a hole in his heart, and to repair muscle tears in his shoulder, and fractures in his pelvis, arm and foot.

Soberay described his healing process as “complete hell,” and added that the things that used to be simple are now extremely challenging for him in the aftermath of the accident.

In returning the verdict, the jury stated that Greyhound “demonstrated reckless indifference to the safety interest” of passengers and drivers by not establishing standard training procedures and rules for its drivers.

Soberay was awarded $23 million for pain and suffering, and another $4 million in punitive damages.

But the jury also added $150, which was not an arbitrary amount.

It was a rebuke to Greyhound for not enforcing the 150-mile rule, which lies at the heart of the accident and resulting lawsuit.

Greyhound Not Enforcing Its Own Rules

What makes this bus accident in Pennsylvania even more tragic is that it probably didn’t have to happen.

Many passengers aboard the Greyhound believe that the bus driver fell asleep behind the wheel, which resulted in the vehicle crashing into the rear of the tractor-trailer.

That was part of the reason the Pennsylvania jury found that the driver did not exercise the proper care when it came to the safety of her passengers.

At issue is the 150-mile rule, which is a rule Greyhound bus drivers are supposed to follow.

The rule requires Greyhound drivers to rest after 150 miles of driving.

That rest period can include walking, stretching, checking the bus to ensure that there are no safety issues, or just grabbing a cup of coffee and relaxing.

But internal documents acquired in a CNN special investigation related to the Pennsylvania crash found that the rule – which is known inside the company as G-40 – is rarely, if ever enforced.

An information bulletin obtained by CNN reporters read as follows:

“Remember Rule G-40 Stop approximately every 150 miles to check tires and walk around the bus for a safety stop at roadside rests. Use these stops to refresh yourself and stay completely alert by using these short-term alertness management actions.”

The bulletin goes on to suggest that drivers stretch out and enjoy fresh air with some light physical activity to keep their minds alert.

“The problem with the 150-mile rule is what you find with the hours-of-service rules governing commercial truck drivers,” stated Amy Witherite, partner of the Texas law firm Eberstein & Witherite, which also has an office in Atlanta, GA. “Greyhound officials have no real way of enforcing that rule unless they are actually on the bus. So as with commercial truck drivers, you find that many Greyhound drivers simply ignore the 150-mile rule, and report that they complied with the rule, when in fact they continued driving long past the mileage that is considered safe.”

In fact, David Leach, CEO of Greyhound, admitted in a recent deposition that the company has no way of enforcing the 150-mile rule.

Leach said that the company must rely on bus drivers to exercise good judgment, especially when they are feeling fatigued.

“I’m just saying, they’re professional motor coach operators,” Leach said in the deposition. “And so they, they do their job, well, I’m expecting our drivers to stop when they’re supposed to.”

In the Pennsylvania bus crash, accident investigators found that Anderson didn’t take a break, and that she was 178 miles into the trip at the time of the wreck.

“We’ve seen that in big truck accidents, one of the major contributing factors is driver fatigue,” Witherite added. “And it’s really no different with a commercial bus driver. These are people operating heavy, powerful machines that require the most precise safety measures to keep passengers and other motorists from danger. Fatigue is a huge problem in the trucking industry and in the commercial bus industry. Drivers feel pressured to make deliveries and to make arrival times, and as a result, they will ignore their own exhaustion because the fear of failure and the consequences, which could include termination, are more urgent for them.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has studied the issue of fatigue extensively, and found that motor coach drivers are more likely to experience fatigue when they are on overnight routes.

In addition, the very act of driving, which is sedentary and monotonous actually creates a greater need for sleep.

“The problem is that there’s a tremendous risk, because the driver has to stay awake when there’s a tremendous pressure biologically to sleep,” stated Deborah Hersman, former Chairwoman of the NTSB.

That’s why some major bus carriers have stopped offering overnight routes, understanding that compromising passenger and driver safety is not worth the trouble.

Do You Need a Big Truck Accident Lawyer After a Truck Accident?

Although commercial bus accidents don’t occur as frequently as big truck wrecks, they can cause the same amount of devastation to a victim’s life. Often times, when people suffer injuries in an accident caused by a commercial vehicle, they are overwhelmed by so many things that they may lose sight of the fact that they need an advocate.

If you live in Austin, Dallas, El Paso or Texarkana, and you’ve been in a big truck accident, don’t let anyone from the other side tell you that you shouldn’t obtain a lawyer. Call 1-800-Truck-Wreck and speak to a member of the team at the big truck accident law firm of Eberstein & Witherite. The Dangers of America’s Aging Infrastructure

New York City, NY, 11/09/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The 2007 Minneapolis bridge collapse on the city’s busy Interstate 35 shed much-needed light on the dangerous condition of America’s aging infrastructure. The collapse, which occurred during rush hour, killed 13 people and injured another 145.

Despite the collapse, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) points out that the U.S. has done little to repair and rebuild the millions of bridges, roads, ports, dams, and levees that make up the nation’s infrastructure – much of which was built during the Works Progress Administration between 1933 and 1940. According to former New York City parks commissioner, Adrian Benepe, “Many of those structures are nearing the end of their useful lives.”

U.S. Infrastructure Given a D+ Grade

Although nearly everyone in government, engineering, and construction agrees that the country’s infrastructure is faring poorly, no one seems to know how to solve what has become a massive problem. A 60 Minutes report pointed out that one in every nine bridges across the country – for a total of 70,000 bridges – is considered structurally deficient. Ray LaHood, the co-chairman of a bipartisan group committed to fixing the infrastructure problem, says the infrastructure in the U.S. is “on life support.”

The ASCE agrees. In fact, it gave U.S. infrastructure a D+ grade when it last analyzed the country’s roads, power grid, and other functional and physical structures in its 2013 report card. Certain parts of the nation’s infrastructure, such as solid waste disposal, performed a little better, with a B- grade. However, other parts, such as levees and inland waterways, did worse, scoring a D- in both categories. The ASCE estimates that it will take $3.6 trillion to repair the infrastructure in the U.S., assuming the money is raised or allocated by lawmakers by 2020.

How New York’s Infrastructure Scores

In New York, the ASCE found that 2,078 of the state’s 17,442 bridges are structurally deficient. The ASCE also determined that New York needs an investment of $22 billion to fix its drinking water infrastructure over the next 20 years. The ASCE also reports that 23 percent of the state’s major roads are in poor condition.

Nursing Home Abuse A Dirty Little Secret Says Boca Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer

x

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 11/09/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Abuse and neglect of nursing home and assisted living facility residents in South Florida is a reality that many adult children of elderly and disabled parents wish didn’t exist. The fact is despite how well things look on the surface of a facility those who live there may not be getting the treatment and respect they deserve. Boca nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne warns families to be vigilant of signs of abuse or neglect of their loved ones.

Nursing home abuse or neglect occurs when elderly or disabled individuals need care and are placed in nursing homes that may appear to be trustworthy (and many are) but residents suffer because of indifference, lack of staff, intentional abuse or even medical malpractice.

For many reasons, sometimes just temporary care after a hospital stay or permanent residency, families must place loved ones in nursing homes. Laws, rules and regulations state that when our loved ones are placed in nursing homes they have rights that must be protected. When those rights are violated by nurses, nurses’ aides, physicians, health care providers or staff, and good quality care is not provided nursing home neglect and abuse occurs.

Osborne & Associates have handled hundreds of nursing home cases where individuals have received horrific and terrible treatment by facilities that range from failing to feed residents to lack of care resulting in bed sores to falls that result in serious injuries including broken hips.

A nursing home could be liable for injuries and medical conditions allowed to progress due to lack of care. The nursing home abuse law firm has investigated many claims where family members were admitted due to a specific reason (including dementia and ongoing issues with falling at home), and the nursing home knows of these problems but they fail to ensure residents’ safety.

Warning signs of nursing home abuse (where mistreatment is intentional as opposed to neglect due to insufficient, uncaring staff or lack of resources) are things like:

Food withholding or intentional lack of care resulting in lost weight, infections and injuries.

Sudden change in outlook or personality by the resident.

Physical restraints or bruises on arms or legs consistent with physical restraints.

The family member appears to be drugged.

Fear of staff.

Wounds or bruises.

Some residents present difficulties for nursing homes. They may suffer from psychiatric disorders or dementia but that doesn’t excuse over medication to chemically sedate them, abuse or neglect. Facilities are relied upon and paid to properly care for residents. If they can’t do so that resident should be elsewhere.

If you believe a loved one is suffering from abuse or neglect contact our office. Don’t waste any time because records can be obtained from the nursing home, reports from state inspections can be reviewed and your family member can be interviewed to help determine if neglect or abuse is happening and whether there may be legal liability for the nursing home.

If you or a family member have questions about nursing home neglect or abuse in the South Florida area, contact Boca nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. You can discuss your case, how the law may apply and your best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your loved one’s injuries.

Recruit Holdings Of Japan Joins “Big Six” Worldwide Classified Companies

Orlando, FL, US, 11/09/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Recruit Holdings of Japan, a multinational staffing and classified advertising company, has become one of the largest classified companies in the world and turned the “Big Five” classified leaders into the “Big Six” this year, the AIM Group reports.

In its 87-page Global Classified Advertising Annual, the AIM Group reviews the growth of Recruit — owner of Indeed.com and a number of other classified advertising sites — and the outlook at the other “Big Six” companies: Axel Springer, Craigslist, EBay, Naspers and Schibsted.

The report examines Craigslist’s spectacular growth and how the classifieds pioneer remains a huge success despite having a target on its back from a number of app-only and other buy-sell sites. It also reviews the potential impact of new arrival Facebook Marketplace on established classified rivals.

It’s Showtime! Hits Long Beach, CA With ‘The Funk Show’ November 19th

Los Angeles, 11/08/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Today, It’s Showtime! announces two Southern California dates for its new concert production series ‘The Funk Show’. Headlined by Cameo, and packed with an all-star lineup that also includes The SOS Band, The Dazz Band, and Con Funk Shun, ‘The Funk Show’ will play Long Beach Arena, Saturday, November 19th in Long Beach, CA and Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, Friday, December 9th in Ontario, CA.

Old School R&B/Funk music fans are in for a treat anytime they can see two or three of these legendary acts on the same bill; however, they are really in for a special treat when they get seven on the same bill, bringing the funk like only they can. Not only because of the richness and depth of their music, but also for the memories their presence in person kindles for fans dating as far back as Cameo’s emergence onto the music scene in the mid-1970’s through the mid-1980’s when every act on the bill enjoyed its greatest success and the R&B/Funk scene thrived at every level. Today, each of the acts on ‘The Funk Show’s bill are recognized as ‘legends’ primarily because their music endures the test of time when competition for spots on radio and the stage was fierce, yet, not only standing above many that aspired to the throne, but also standing among their (now legendary) counterparts they will share the stage with on November 19th and December 9th.

Without question, some will ask, “Why so many acts on one bill?”, but It’s Showtime! executive producer Byron Allen believes that his patrons win when they get tremendous value for their discretionary spending dollars. He also believes that having several acts on one bill saves his patrons time getting their ‘Fill of the Funk’ — and yet, with all that said, the underlying genius of ‘The Funk Show’ is that it pits masters of stage and show in friendly, yet very real ‘competitive’ settings to deliver the best show…where once again, patrons of his shows win!

According to the company’s website, “The purpose of It’s Showtime! is to provide live entertainment through concerts and special events.” The company’s mission is “To provide high-energy concerts where we can be proud of its music artists.” Without question, the artists appearing on ‘The Funk Show’ embody the collective spirit of live performances high in energy and rich in timeless music that personifies the It’s Showtime! brand moving forward.

The November 19th show is slated for Long Beach Arena — Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center located at 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90802. Ticket prices are $45-150 and are available online via Ticketmaster http://bit.ly/FunkShowLB. The show features Cameo, The SOS Band, Con Funk Shun, The Bar*Kays, One Way, GAP Experience, and Mary Jane Girls. Show begins at 7:00 PM. The December 9th show is slated for Citizens Business Bank Arena located at 4000 Ontario Center, Ontario, CA 91764. Ticket prices are $45-150 and are available online via Ticketmaster online http://bit.ly/FunkShowONT. The show features Cameo, The Dazz Band, Con Funk Shun, The Bar*Kays, One Way, GAP Experience, and Mary Jane Girls. Show begins at 7:00 PM.

Study Shows Outdoor Pollution Worsens Air Quality in Fertility Labs

Riverdale, NJ, 11/07/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Without effective air filtration, pollution throughout the world will continue to get worse, and the consequences will include a variety of illnesses that stress health care systems – especially in underdeveloped countries – and increased costs to clean dirty air. Read what must be done to tackle the air pollution problem. http://www.camfil.com/takeabreath/what-must-be-done-to-tackle-the-air-pollution-problem/

Air pollution is a pressing issue in many of the world’s largest cities, which are often plagued with traffic congestion, overpopulation, and industrial production. Watch Videos

The hidden costs of pollution often go undetected until scientific studies identify correlations between poor indoor air quality, its effect on  breathing and resulting lung illnesses.

That’s been true for cities such as Beijing and Los Angeles, which have been struggling with lowering emissions for years, even before citizens began to exhibit health issues associated with contaminants in the air.

What’s even more troubling is that laboratories, which are supposed to be sterile environments for research and learning, are also becoming contaminated by particle pollution, which may compromise test results conducted in these facilities.

A recent study found that this danger is even more prevalent in fertilization labs, which are designed to help create new life.

Association Between Air Quality and Embryo Development

The study, which was published in the Asian Journal of Andrology, confirmed what other studies and research have found, namely that poor air quality inside a fertility lab damages embryo development, and lowers implantation and pregnancy rates.

That’s because adverse airborne particulates drawn from polluted outside air, can infiltrate these labs, and chemically react with cellular development within these embryos.

While these studies are careful not to claim a direct causation, the findings do indicate that optimal reproductive success in a fertilization lab is not possible when the air quality in that lab is contaminated.

Types of Contaminants Found in Fertilization Labs

The study also found that the most common type of contaminant of concern in these labs were volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified VOCs as gases that are emitted from solids and liquid that can cause adverse health.

These organic compounds are derived from chemicals that are often found in common household goods such as wax; varnish; paint; cleansers; disinfectants; air fresheners; pesticides; wood preservatives; copiers; printers; correction fluid; glues and permanent markers.

So clearly, there are many sources of VOCs in fertilization labs that are not only drawn from outside air, but are also created within the lab itself.

In fact, the EPA has estimated that VOC levels are two to five times higher indoors than outdoors.

Which Air Filtration Is Most Effective?

In many fertility labs,  particulate filtration may be insufficient to ensure the sterility of the environment. This often means that particle filtration must be combined with VOC filtration when selecting air filtration systems.

Making things even more challenging is that operational managers at these labs must take into account other factors that affect the air quality in these facilities.

For example, the size of a lab, the type of equipment used in the lab; the construction material used to build the lab; room temperature; room humidity; disposable materials used in the lab; and solvents used to clean the lab all have an effect on the air quality.

Without understanding how these factors all contribute to worsening indoor air quality, it is nearly impossible to implement a successful air filtration strategy.
