Avelox Lawsuit Heading To The Courtrooms In Minnesota
April 10, 2017 – – A number of peripheral neuropathy lawsuits are moving forward in courts in Minnesota, regarding Avelox as well as Cipro and Levaquin. Allegations made against pharmaceutical companies manufacturing these drugs involve the development of peripheral neuropathy after taking the medication.
A representative for the website focusing on such lawsuits says, “There are a number of Avelox lawsuit cases going to trial. In fact, of the 10 cases that are currently being prepared for trial, two involve Cipro and the remaining eight involve Avelox.”
There are currently more than 700 cases that involve the class of drugs known as fluoroquinolones. Of these, the majority focus on Levaquin, which is manufactured and distributed by Janssen Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Fluoroquinolones have been found to have a number of risks and side effects, and plaintiffs in these cases claim the drug manufacturers knew about these but still continued to market the medications.
“Levaquin and Avelox, as well as Cipro, have all faced scrutiny over the years over fears that the risks associated with taking these drugs may outweigh the benefits that they offer,” says the spokesperson for Levaquin-lawsuit.org. “The problem is, the manufacturers continued to market these drugs even after those risks were brought to light.”
The FDA has warned that this particular class of drugs should not be prescribed to certain patients. Those with urinary tract infections, acute bronchitis, and sinusitis should not be given the prescriptions. However, the drugs were prescribed to patients with these uncomplicated infections and plaintiffs claim that there have been dire consequences. The FDA has warned about disabling complications that affect tendons, muscles, nerves, joints, and the central nervous system. A black box warning has been ordered to be included for all drugs in this class.
The FDA previously ordered manufacturers of the drug to strengthen their warnings regarding peripheral neuropathy. In the years since the drugs first hit the market, there have been several reported cases of the condition, seemingly caused by taking Avelox or one of the other drugs in the class. Lawsuits have been piling up over the past few years and many manufacturers have settled some claims out of court to avoid a jury trial.
