Smartphones are not just receiving messages, calls and emails. Consumers can also and unknowingly catch flu using any mobile device. Phones carry surprisingly a high number of germs as compared to the bathroom door handle or even a toilet seat. With the high occurrence of contamination through cell phone use, Andrew Reid, Founder of Awesome Wipes together with his team, has launched a health awareness campaign versus incautious cell phone use.
Reid said, “We in an age wherein we are highly dependent on our phones and gadgets. I’ve read that an average smartphone user may check their phones at an average of 150 times during a normal day. That frequency alone can trigger or attract a lot of germs. Not to add the manner and ways we use our phones, where we place them.”
Studies have found, just one phone, can harbor thousands of colonies of germs and bacteria like that of Coliform, which indicates fecal contamination. Germs, such as coliform, found on phones, tablets and phone cases have been linked to causing the flu, pink eye, diarrhea and acne.
Reid went on to mentioned, “Transferring germs onto a phone is easy. Just place it on a restaurant table and it will instantly be infected with a germs. Table may look visibly clean; however, in many cases they are not as clean as they look. Using an anti-bacterial cell phone cleaner will help eliminate most of these issues.”
Electronic devices especially mobile phones in public places are always at risk of contamination through a direct transfer of germs and even distributed by air.
Without the use of proper cleaning wipes and disinfectant sprays, bacteria and viruses may not be wiped off the surface of the table, chair, doors, laptops and phones.
“Most of the time, we’re using the wrong material to wipe off dirt or clean our gadgets,” said Reid, “We believe that is the number 1 culprit in this epidemic.” According to research, most people often wipe their phones on their clothes to clean the screen. Although some may use a damp towel to wipe phones, a 2012 test from HML Labs in Indiana, found that water was least effective in removing germs. Studies also show that some bacteria are resistant to low-grade cleaners.
Alcohol, on the other hand, is too strong of a cleaning agent which may cause serious damage on the device’s internal work particularly those that are highly sensitive like touch screen smartphones and tablets.
“The best way for smartphone users to avoid or lessen the risk to contamination is remembering to use a good quality disinfecting wipe,” said Reid. “Use specially designed cleaning materials like electronic wipes to ensure that the phone is disinfected accordingly, and so it will remain un-damaged.” Most liquid cleaners can cause liquid damage to today’s smartphones, which is why many gadget experts would prefer special cell phone cleaner product to ensure safety while using the device.
