Bayer Posts Fifth Straight Year of Growth in Asia-Pac Despite U.S. Xarelto Lawsuit Numbers

According to the article, the Xarelto manufacturer has posted its fifth consecutive year of growth in its Asia-Pacific division. The rise is in part because of Xarelto and, according to the news source, the company sold about 5 million packs in the region.

Xarelto, manufactured by Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson, was first introduced in the United States in 2011 when it was approved by the FDA for preventing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing knee and hip replacements, atrial fibrillation, and for general use in reducing the recurrence of blood clots and stent thrombosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Since its introduction to the market, its manufacturers have faced thousands of lawsuits in the U.S. after patients complained of negative side effects about which they claim the companies did not adequately inform them. Those cases filed federally have been combined into a multidistrict litigation panel, MDL No. 2592, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Plaintiffs in the cases allege that the drug caused them to suffer side effects including epidural hematoma, blood clots in the lung, brain hemorrhages, internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal bleeding, stroke and heart attack.

Bellwether trials on those cases filed in MDL No. 2592 are expected to begin in February 2017.
