Bel Marra Health (www.belmarrahealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially-formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is commenting on new research that is associating oral hygiene and prostatitis.

There is much research to support the link between oral hygiene and other health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and even kidney disease. In a recent study published in the journal Dentistry, researchers have found a connection between gum disease and prostatitis, which is a condition in men that causes the prostate to swell. The study tested close to 30 men over the age of 21 who experienced both gum disease and prostatitis. According to the study, after the men underwent treatment for gum disease, they saw significant improvement in their gums within four to eight weeks.

“This study shows that if we treat the gum disease, it can improve the symptoms of prostatitis and the quality of life for those who have the disease,” notes Dr. Nabil Bissada, chair of periodontics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, in a university news release. According to Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health, oral hygiene plays a significant role in overall health as it relates to certain known conditions.

“It’s kind of odd to wrap your head around how treating a disease in your mouth can simultaneously have a positive impact on a different disease in another part of the body,” says Marchione. “But that is precisely what the results of this study have proven, which is consistent with other studies relating oral hygiene and overall health.”

Since 21 of the 27 patients saw their prostatitis symptoms improve, Dr. Marchione suggests practicing proper oral hygiene to prevent the onset of prostatitis, which includes regular brushing and flossing.

“Prostatitis is not something you want to develop. So if brushing at least twice a day and flossing every day will reduce the chances of contracting the disease, it’s something everyone, not just men, should take seriously,” concludes Dr. Marchione.
