Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on a new study showing that treating depression may help in reducing the risk of heart disease.
Researchers at Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institution in Salt Lake City, Utah have published findings showing that effectively treating depression may aid in the reduction of heart disease. Over 7,500 people participated in the study showing that treating depression could reduce a person’s chance of a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and death. “Studies like these, where we find that a treatment for one disease can actually help treat or reduce the occurrences of another disease, are often quite informative,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “Results like these provide insight into both conditions and help researchers draw conclusions that they may not have otherwise considered.”
Researchers were previously unsure of the effect treating depression would have on heart disease. They acknowledged there was a connection, but this study adds motivation into the concept of treating depression knowing that it will reduce at least the short-term risk of heart disease.
“One of the main goals of any study is to acquire information that can be positively applied to practical situations,” Dr. Marchione continues. “Even if treating depression slightly reduces the chances of heart disease, it’s a path that should be considered.”
Those successfully treated for depression had a 4.6% chance of heart disease. That number rises slightly to 4.8% to those without depression. Those diagnosed with depression but did not respond to treatment had a 6.0% chance of acquiring heart disease and 6.4% for those who developed depression while taking part in the study.
“At the end of the study, researchers can say that based on their results, not treating depression increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. That’s important knowledge to possess as we try to treat people with both conditions.”
