Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on signs that may indicate a heart attack.
A recent article published by Prevention details symptoms men and women should be on the lookout for that may be a sign of a heart attack. (Source: Heid, M., “5 signs you have a heart problem,” Prevention, March 15, 2016; http://www.prevention.com/health/signs-of-heart-issues.)
“Although it is possible to suffer a stroke or a heart attack without experiencing any symptoms, certain unsuspecting signs could mean potential danger,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “If people are aware of these symptoms early on, they will know what to look for.”
Severe chest pain is considered one of the main indicators of the onset of a heart attack. Individuals, particularly seniors, are instructed to call 911 if they experience any kind of chest pain, even moderate, as this can indicate a cardiovascular problem. This includes intense pressure, the sensation of a “pulled muscle” and pain that radiates from one’s neck, shoulder, arm or jaw.
“People shouldn’t ignore any significant chest pain,” Dr. Marchione insists. “If they notice it as something out of the ordinary, especially after a workout, it’s important to call for help or ask someone to take them to the hospital.”
Shortness of breath and lightheadedness are two other symptoms that need to be considered, especially during moderate activity, such as climbing stairs or when standing up suddenly. Both can be signs of an impending heart attack and should be addressed immediately.
“If a person feels dizzy or lightheaded, especially if it’s accompanied by heart palpitations, there’s the possibility they may have a blockage or valve-related issue,” says Dr. Marchione.
Another indicator of a potential heart attack that shouldn’t be ignored is experiencing flu-like symptoms and severe stomach aches. Although an upset stomach or nausea can be symptoms of various other ailments, if these symptoms appear after one has engaged in physical activity, they could indicate a potential heart attack.
“Even somewhat common symptoms like fatigue or excessive sleepiness, particularly in women, could be red flags,” says Dr. Marchione. “The key is to take notice of any out-of-the-ordinary symptoms one may be experiencing and speak to a doctor as soon as possible.”
