Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on a recent study that shows light resistance training can slow brain shrinkage in seniors.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, researchers at the University of British Columbia spent a year examining 54 women aged 65–75 that were split into three groups. The first group performed light upper- and lower-body workouts for one hour twice a week; the second group did the same, but only once a week; and the third group performed an hour of stretching, relaxation, and balance exercises once a week. The researchers discovered that the first group showed the most improvement with the least amount of brain shrinkage compared to the others. “Doctors have long known that brain exercises, like crosswords or puzzles, play a positive role when it comes to improving cognitive function,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “But the results from this new study show that the value of weightlifting, when it comes to how it affects the brain, may have been overlooked.”
The brain is structured to adjust to a person’s lifestyle and is continually adding and abandoning neutrons throughout their lifespan. How someone lives, namely how active they are each day, plays a determining role in how the brain responds.
“The results of this study may not be a breakthrough, but the lesson is important for seniors who are looking for ways to maintain their health and brain function,” Dr. Marchione concludes. “At times it may be difficult to get outside and walk because of the weather or other factors, but seniors should know there are other ways to keep their mind active. The study isn’t saying they need to lift 50-pound barbells, but some light weightlifting just twice a week can go a long way to preventing cognitive decline.”
