The ongoing drought in the Eastern Cape has made Bennett Plumbers in Port Elizabeth focus more attention on leak detection to save consumers the penalties imposed by the local government to curb water consumption.

Bennett Plumbers have advised consumers who suspect that there is an underground leak on their property that the easiest way to confirm that there is a leak is to take a meter reading, ensure no water is used for an hour or two, and then take a second reading.

That is the easy part, you need a professional plumber with the right equipment to actually determine where the leak is. Fortunately plumbers do not have to rely on the methods used in the 19th century which was based on manual sounding with a wooden stick. The principle is however the same that water leaks produce sounds and current technology uses a transducer that is sensitive to sounds coming from water pipes. The machine amplifies the sound and a plumber who is an expert in this field is able to identify exactly where the leak is.

If a leak can be accurately located it limits the excavation that has to be done. This obvious benefit is passed on the consumer as it reduces the time and labour required to locate the leak.

According to Mr David Brüssow, the director of Bennett Plumbers, other technology that is used when a drain repeatedly gets blocked is CCTV. A CCTV camera is inserted into the drain and moved along while the images on the monitor are checked by a plumber. When a blockage is encountered the exact location of the blockage is recorded so that the necessary repairs can be done.

This technology is also used by prospective buyers of a property to check the condition of the drains before the purchase is finalised. This could save the new owner large costs if there is a problem in the drain and it is only revealed at a later stage.
