“One of the biggest concerns of people over 60, next to worrying about running out of money in retirement, is that they or a family member might one day suffer from Alzheimer’s disease,”says Loves Park, Illinois wealth and income planner Antonio Fillipone.

Fillipone, author of the Amazon bestseller “Financial Planning For The Not Yet Wealthy,” says he wanted to address his clients’ very real concerns about memory loss. He began searching for an effective way to help them find methods of keeping their brains healthy and active.

Fillipone says that several studies, including a 2011 Harris Interactive survey have found that adults fear Alzheimer’s almost as much as cancer. The Harris study also discovered that 44% of adults in the U.S. have a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s, which is up from 35% in 2006.

“Brain health is absolutely crucial to the quality of life for all of us, especially those who are entering the retirement phase of life. While it is true that Alzheimer’s and other degenerative brain conditions are poorly understood and somewhat unpredictable, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be doing all we can to improve our brain functionality,” he stated.

“Many of my clients were looking for ideas on how can to fight back against brain diseases or at least slow them down a little. I found out that the key is keeping your body and brain active.”

With this in mind, Fillipone contacted a group known for its’ fun and innovative brain health events, designed especially for seniors. He found their approach to brain health and senior outreach refreshing and innovative and decided to sponsor some of these brain health events himself.

“Our events are filled with brain-boosting ideas and a lot of laughs and fun. It’s totally different than the usual dry and boring seminar. We learn… but the learning is woven into the fun we have,” he says.

Fillipone’s events use scientifically-proven exercises designed to boost the brain through entertaining activities such as solving puzzles and riddles, deciphering mysteries, and learning to see life differently, which keeps the brain fit.

“Social connectivity has long been known to boost mental fitness,” says Fillipone. “That’s why our activities are also designed to be done within small groups. “Meeting new people, hearing their stories, and sharing a few laughs increases your mental well-being, no matter what age you are.”

Fillipone maintains that increasing mental acuity and flexibility helps his clients and prospective clients make better decisions, including decisions about their financial futures.

“Attending this kind of event can really help people develop the critical thinking skills needed to avoid making bad decisions with their money, including failure to plan.” he says.

Fillipone feels hosting “brain jogs” also allows him to spend more time researching his clients’ backgrounds, interests, and goals so he can anticipate key areas in which he needs to focus more attention.

“So many planning mistakes are made because advisors don’t bother to understand the mindsets, goals, and stories of their clients. Brain events let me learn more about a client or referral than I ever could sitting across a desk,” he states.

Tony encourages people living in the Loves Park area to contact him to be notified of upcoming brain health events.
“They cost nothing, are fun, and you’ll meet lots of new, interesting people.”
