This is the eleventh book Coates has authored. The book was written with the aim to provide help to those needing to influence decision makers. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because it will unveil all of the author’s best secrets.
Yes Vote: The Public Hearing Plan for Developers sets its main focus on case studies and lessons learned from 20 years in overcoming real estate project opponents. Readers will likely find a particular interest in particular details about packaging information to set the stage for approval.
“The brain needs information that is simplified, repetitive, emotion-based, and – above all – visual,” says Katie Coates.
Yes Vote: The Public Hearing Plan for Developers is published by Morgan James.
Katie Coates has a background as an award-winning consultant with expertise in overcoming opposition, building community support, and getting approval for her clients’ projects.. Katie learned the ropes of overcoming opposition by going door-to-door to inform the public about controversial construction projects.
Another part of her background was unexpectedly helpful to her in getting clients the approvals they need. She studied acting at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and acted, sang and danced in 40 productions throughout high school and college.
“The public hearing is very similar to the theater,” says Katie Coates. “You need to put on a show.”
She also credits her experience as a waitress with giving her expertise in crisis communications because, as she puts it, “Hungry people are very mean.”
When asked why she wrote the book, Katie Coates said, “I kept seeing real estate developers get defeated at public hearings and knew they could prevail instead, with the right information. There was no other book on the market on this topic, so I decided to write it.”
Katie Coates has hopes that the book will help project applicants take control of their experience at public hearings and get decision maker approval. The book’s creation was a bit of a challenge. At one point during the writing process, the author had three extended trips scheduled.
“I wrote one long chapter while on a flight to Copenhagen, using Google Keep as a transcriber,” says Katie Coates. “I spoke low enough so that I didn’t wake my seat mate, who was luckily wearing earbuds while she slept.”
In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking her friends, family, and clients, who all encouraged her to write this book, saying, “My dad, a retired Green Beret and 82nd Airborne Paratrooper, has always been very supportive of me. He suggested that I become a consultant right after I graduated from college. It took me a few years to get there, but I finally did. It’s been great to have his confidence in me as an encouraging force throughout my career.”
