Boomer Benefits and Danielle K Roberts are pleased to announce legislative changes which will improve Medicare Advantage plans. There are a number of changes to Medicare identified in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. The legislation is a bill which extends funding for the government through March 23, of 2018 (http://bit.ly/2BSUQRZ ). It also contains important Medicare provisions which will help seniors through the availability of better and more coordinated health care services.

Danielle K Roberts spoke to an interviewer, “We expect that these positive changes will continue the upward trend of increasing Medicare Advantage enrollment by beneficiaries. The elimination of the donut hole a year earlier than was planned is also very welcome news for our seniors who take expensive brand name medications.”

Currently around 30 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. It is expected that Medicare Advantage enrollment will increase when seniors compare Medicare plans and find that improved home health care benefits make Medicare Advantage plans more attractive.

New legislation passed by Congress will improve Medicare Advantage plans beginning in 2019, improving home health care benefits, and expanding supplemental benefits for chronic illness. The legislation strengthens Medicare Advantage’s proven success by expanding supplemental benefits specifically for those with chronic conditions, increasing telemedicine benefits, and extending the value-based design model to all states. It also eliminates the Medicare Part D donut hole at the end of this year in both standalone Part D plans and Medicare Advantage plans.

Proponents also applauded the bill for formally eliminating the ACA’s IPAB provision, which is a non-elected panel that was referred to as the “death panel” by critics of the ACA. The panel would have been instructed to study ways to curtail Medicare spending should certain thresholds be met. However, the panel was never formally convened as spending never reached the levels set in the statute.

To help fund these improvements, the legislation increased Medicare Part B & D premiums from 80% to 85% for individuals earning more than $500,000 and families over $750,000.
