Brian Walters Board Certified by Texas Board of Legal Specialization

January 31, 2017 – – Houston, TX – Brian Walters, named partner of The Walters Law Firm PLLC, has again received the title of “Board Certified” in the specialty area of Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS).

Each year, TBLS names a small, exclusive group of lawyers as Board Certified. Certification means that within the Texas legal community, an attorney has demonstrated substantial experience and tested competence. Only Board Certified attorneys are allowed by the State Bar of Texas to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in a select area of the law.

Walters was initially TBLS Board Certified in Family Law in 2003 and held an active certification until 2008, when he elected to take a break from practicing law. When he returned to full-time law practice in 2012, Walters had to wait three calendar years before reapplying. Upon passing the TBLS exam in 2016, he became Board Certified in Family Law once again.

The process to become Board Certified by TBLS is complex. Upon completing the comprehensive application, approved attorneys must pass a difficult specialty area exam and undergo vetting by judges, other lawyers and the State Bar. Eligible lawyers must have practiced in the particular area of law for at least five years.

The Supreme Court of Texas established TBLS in 1974 at the request of State Bar of Texas. Of more than 100,000 attorneys licensed to practice in Texas, only 7,450 are Board Certified in 22 select areas of Texas law. Of those, fewer than 1,000 attorneys are Board Certified specifically in the area of Family Law.
