Bridge and Blend, the all-new incense brand from Project Felicia inspired by original 1000-year-old Japanese blends, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raising funds to bring the project to life.

In the ancient Japanese literature, The Tale of Genji, there exists perhaps the oldest known scent formulation on record. During these times, incense were often used as a home fragrance to scent the living space. It is from this history that Bridge and Blend takes inspiration to deliver classic scents with modern sensibilities.

“After living overseas for over 15 years I returned home on a journey to find the answer to the question, ‘What is the scent of Japan?’” says founder and creator Hiro Nakayama on the inspiration behind the project. “After a long search and inspiration from the Tale of Genji, I came to find that no such product existed. I have been in the fragrance industry for some time and I realized I have all essentials – network,  resources, experience and skills to make this happen!”

Bridge and Blend incense is is blended based on the 1000-year-old recipes and handmade by an incense master based in the Awaji Island where approximately 70% of incense in Japan is produced— with premium grade 100% natural ingredients imported from around the world. The incense arrive in portable “fit-in-your-hand” packaging made of durable steel, which is reusable and recyclable from head to toe. The lid is used as incense vessel, with the metal incense dish as an incense stand designed to burn incense thoroughly from top to bottom. The container is capable of storing re-fillable incense of 20 pieces.

According to ancient record, more than 100 recipes of incense blending were developed during the Heian period (794 – 1185). Of all, the following six scents called MUKUSA NO TAKIMONO [六種の薫物] represents the sensitivity of the people of that time. These scents have been recreated today by Bridge and Blend and are available to purchase by backers of the campaign:

• BAIKA | JAPANESE PLUM
• KAYO | LOTUS FLOWER
• JIJYU | EPHEMERALITY
• KIKKA | CHRYSANTHEMUM
• RAKUYO | LEAF-FALL
• KUROBO | MOMENT

“This historical incense is not widely known even among Japanese. To preserve this story, we feel the need to make it known not only in Japan, but also in the world. We believe that the more people know about it, the story remains alive,” adds Nakayama. “At an emotional level, our product lets consumers transcend time and space through the scent to 1000 years ago in Japan, with their creativity and sensibility. We have now lost freedom to travel. It is not enough that users enjoy pleasant scent for long hours at home, but also that they travel through scent.”
