Buyer Agent Service Releases Report on REALTOR Definition CA FL TX and by NAR

Many people misunderstand the word “REALTOR” when they use it to talk about real estate professionals. It actually has a very specific meaning as defined by the National Association of Realtors.

The word REALTOR, is a trademarked word owned by the National Association of Realtors® (NAR). The caps are sometimes used to reference a trademarked word, although technically it should always be written as “Realtor” or “” Realtor® This word is used to differentiate licensees who are members of that national association of real estate professionals. Almost all real estate licensees, whether they are in the state of CA, FL or TX or any other state are in fact REALTORs. The reason for this is because NAR membership is typically required to access the local multiple listing service (MSL). The report points out that in most states, the multiple listing service of current properties for sale is maintained by local boards. This access is essential to help clients find available properties. These boards usually require membership in their state association of REALTORS as well as the national group.

The National Association of Realtors its specific definition of the term in this way:

“The term REALTOR® has one, and only one, meaning: REALTOR® is a federally registered collective membership mark which identifies a real estate professional who is member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.”

A spokesperson for Skyfor says, “So when someone says they are “looking for a REALTOR near me”, they haven’t really narrowed the field very much. A recent article in the local Denver paper Westword, says that Denver has many more real estate agents than real estate listings, and perhaps as many as ten times more. On any one day, Denver may have over 2,000 listings in its MLS. The state regulatory agency states that active agents number about 21,000 (in the Denver metro area alone).”
