Calgary Retractable Awnings Retailer Lauds Shift To More Walkable Alberta Cities
Owner of Calgary retractable awnings store Awnings And More, Jason Smith, says he is pleased to see that both Calgary and Edmonton are moving in the direction of being more “walkable.”
Calgary, Canada – April 16, 2018 /PressCable/ —
Owner of Calgary retractable awnings retailer and installation service Awnings And More Jason Smith says he is pleased with a recent Globe and Mail article that says so-called “walkable housing” is making inroads in both Calgary and Edmonton.
Walkable housing is housing that is within easy walking distance of amenities and public transit. A recent Globe and Mail article highlighted how more people who are moving to Alberta’s two biggest cities are specifically requesting housing that is in neighbourhoods where they can easily live without the use of cars.
Smith says the news that Calgary and Edmonton are moving in a more pedestrian friendly direction is welcome to him as a father and someone who just generally enjoys walking.
“Both Calgary and Edmonton are wonderful cities, but it’s no secret we love our cars here in Alberta,” Smith said. “It’s wonderful to hear that people who are moving into the cities are seeking out housing that is near amenities and transit to cut down on car usage. It helps to show future generations that car ownership isn’t mandatory when living in a city and hopefully it will serve to encourage city and private developers to think more about walk-first neighbourhoods rather than drive-first neighbourhoods.”
In the Globe and Mail article, it says so many people who are moving into Calgary and Edmonton are requesting walkable housing that realtors can now make it a selling point for houses that are within easy walking distance of amenities and public transit. One Edmonton realtor, the article states, landed her most lucrative sale through a special website she had set up to focus completely on walkability in the city.
According to Statistics Canada, residents in Calgary and Edmonton are most likely to use their cars to run their daily errands, and the population of both cities is growing at about 14 and 15 percent respectively. However, millennials who are less prone to use a vehicle and baby boomers who are downsizing their residences are now demanding more walkable neighbourhoods, accounting for the shift.
