As a spokesperson for Cammies & Canines noted, there are over 1,100 homeless veterans in San Diego alone.

“Psychological and physical disabilities resulting from war and time in service can create an insurmountable challenge for veterans when they don’t have a proper support system,” the spokesperson said, adding that thanks to the San Diego based company that’s opening a doggy daycare “sanctuary” that will be run by veterans, they will have the opportunity for rehabilitation and support.

“Giving a chance to heal through animal therapy, the sanctuary will be staffed by homeless veterans or those coping with service-connected disabilities. The program’s aim is to provide psychological and physical healing through the joy and love that the dogs will bring while giving veterans a chance to get back on their feet.”

Creutzburg, a ten year Marine Corps Veteran, knows first-hand the struggles associated with PTSD, suicidal thoughts, and homelessness. He teamed up with Dominick Mazotti, a veteran of the Fire Department and paramedic who has had similar challenges, to create Cammies & Canines.

Cammies & Canines will make a difference in the lives of the humans at the sanctuary and the animals they’ll be caring for. Those who have returned from war will find a sense of community with other veterans; they will work together to find a sense of purpose and overcome some of the challenges resulting from their time in service. The joyous and unconditionally loving dogs will provide emotional respite with stress-reducing interaction and play while being given the care they need to stay happy and healthy.

“This unique approach to rehabilitation will do more than give veterans a place to work, it will be healing our heroes by giving them a sense of belonging and love that will help promote the healing process,” the spokesperson said.

To help pay for the costs associated with opening the new Cammies & Canines program, Creutzburg and Mazotti just launched a fundraiser on Indiegogo. There, they hope to raise $50,000 and help as many homeless veterans as possible.
