Charleston is renowned for its beautiful harbour, creeks, barrier islands and inshore fishing. Its beauty also makes it a popular wedding destination. Ben Powers, a Charleston native, is Reel Time Charter Adventures’ captain and tour guide. His experience with commercial and recreational fishing and familiarity with the local waterways, creeks, islands and ecosystem make him the perfect guide.

Reel Time Charter Adventures’ new Epic Bay 22sc model 22ft fishing boat comes rigged with the best equipment, including a 2015 Yamaha four stroke, a saltwater series Minn Kota i-pilot trolling motor and a nine-inch Raymarine GPS/fish finder unit; beneficial for customised inshore fishing charters. Captain Powers guides clients on half-day (4hr), three-quarter day (6hr) and full-day (8hr) charters.

The inshore fishing charters are limited to groups of six or less, making for a more intimate and personalised tours. Fish are bountiful in quantity and varietals. The most common fish are: red drum, black drum, flounder, lady fish, sheep head, speckled sea trout and sharks. Sharks are quite common in Charleston, the most common being: hammerhead, tiger, lemon, bull, nurse, black tip and bonnethead sharks.

Captain Powers also takes Reel Time Charter Adventures’ clients on the Morris Island Lighthouse and dolphin tours, with no more than six per group, that include venturing into the unique salt marshes, the habitat of the local population of bottle nose dolphins, loggerhead turtles, pelicans, egrets, herons and wading birds and the best views of historic Charleston.

If the group is interested in Charleston’s marine environment and ecosystem, Captain Powers can combine an eco tour, so the group can learn about the local oysters, pluff mud, spartina grass and salinity, and their significance and impact on the surrounding estuaries and marshlands. In this way, Reel Time Charter Adventures upholds an environmental responsibility.
