Chesterfield Woman Alleges E-Cigarette Explosion Caused Third-Degree Burns As E-Cig Lawsuit Filings Continue

May 25, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of an NBC12 On Your Side report discussing a potential increase in e-cigarette battery explosions. In addition, it details the story of a Chesterfield woman who began using e-cigarettes in an attempt to curb a reported 24-year addiction to cigarettes. The woman was noted to have been taken to the VCU burn center when an electronic cigarette exploded near her face.

She states that the device shot up nearly 10 feet off of where it had been on her bedroom floor, hitting the wall, and setting the carpet and a towel on fire. The woman’s hand also allegedly caught fire, and she suffered second and third-degree burns. According to the news report, the director at the VCU Evans-Haynes Burn Center, a Dr. Michael Feldman, “…says over the last five years, he’s noticed a gradual increase in the number of patients admitted with injuries from vaping battery explosions.” He stated, “We have seen some first-degree, but most of what we see are second and third-degree burns, and we’ve had patients who needed surgery because of it.”

The FDA has reportedly taken notice of this potential increase and has recently increased restrictions around the products, particularly to protect minors from getting their hands on them. At times, however, rules surrounding this do not prevent this occurrence as intended. Recently in New York, a young 14-year-old boy was visiting a mall kiosk selling e-cigarette products when one of the devices reportedly exploded in his face, leaving him blind in his left eye. The boy’s father has since pursued legal action following his severe injuries and is working with Attorney Marc Freund of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman to do so.

Attorney Freund is helping several clients to pursue legal action following alleged e-cigarette explosions.
