Texas based truck crash lawyer Amy Witherite says that many pedestrians in the state become injured in accidents involving 18-wheelers each year. Children are among those that are most at risk Witherite emphasizes stating, “statistically children and elderly individuals are at a higher risk than other groups of being seriously hurt in any type of pedestrian accident involving a motor vehicle.

The most recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that over 76,000 people in the U.S. were injured in these accidents in 2012. A reported 4,743 people were killed. Many of these involve commercial vehicles, which due to their scale typically lead to fatal injuries.

In another headline making 18-wheeler accident that occurred in Bexar County last year, a pedestrian died after the driver of the truck struck him and failed to stop to render aid.

Transportation safety advocates suggest there are things individuals can do to reduce their risks of being involved in a pedestrian accident in Texas. These include:

In cases where a pedestrian has been injured as a result of the negligence of a driver Witherite states that victims can discuss their case with a personal injury attorney to understand the scope of their legal options. According to Witherite “this step is often critical for pedestrians who have been hurt in an accident or the surviving family members of those killed as a result of this type of tragedy due to the challenges that accompany trying to obtain what is fair compensation for financial damages.”

Charges have not been filed in connection with the recent truck accident. Officials were investigating the incident at the time of the report.
