With the Chinese New Year kicking off a week of unprecedented back to back events, unheard of for any city in the world, Allan Wong, general manager of Kung Fu Plaza, has decided to call this week “Super-Week”, and is asking Las Vegas locals and visitors alike to blend the three traditions.

Although the Year of the Dragon represents authority, prosperity, and good fortune, the Dragon is also associated with abundance, evolution and improvement as well. Lamar Hunt, the founder of the American Football league AFL, and the creator of the Super Bowl had the same good fortune and vision to evolve the National Football league NFL and AFL into a single entity and come up with the name “Super Bowl” in which he credits to his daughter calling a Football she was playing with, a “super ball”. By merging a bowl game and his daughter’s superball, Hunt created an American Icon.   Valentines’ day has similar roots, which has been historically linked to a priest who performed wedding ceremonies despite Emperor Claudius II outlawing marriage of young men in 2nd century Rome, believing that married men made poor soldiers.

“Entering the year of the Dragon will bring evolution, abundance and improvement to the world”, said Wong. “Traditionally the first day of the Lunar New Year is a time when the young members of the family visit the elders, much like during Christmas time for Western families, it is also an opportunity for the young to introduce to senior family members their new love interest.”

“The first day of Chinese New Year we will be recommending the Kung Fu Plaza Roast Duck”, said Wong.  Duck brings wealth and luxury in the Dragon year, along with Fish and seafood. Traditionalist would suggest that diners refrain from eating meat on the first day of the lunar new year and consider vegetarian plates.

“Religious practitioners’ all throughout Asia, especially Buddhists will only eat vegetables on the first day of the lunar new year,” says Wong. Tradition states that the occasional vegetarian diet, much like fasting, ensures longevity and peace for them.

One tradition that everyone seems to embrace, is the color red. Red will be omnipresent on banners embedded in the decorations that will be prevalent through out the stores in Chinatown. A symbol of Good Luck in the Chinese New Year, red is also in the colors of both Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Red is also associated with Saint Valentine’s Day.

“With so many traditions, people often times are torn, and confused by which traditions to follow,” said Wong. “Perhaps this year they don’t need to choose one or the other, but blend the three super traditions together at Kung Fu Plaza Restaurant, with a great Thai & Chinese meal with the family and love interest on Sunday February 11.”
