Clinical Trial Is Focus Of Investigation As Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiffs Continue Their Legal Battle

June 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a Duke University clinical trial for Xarelto which occurred in 2006 and was commissioned by the makers of the drug, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson and Johnson subsidiary, and Bayer AG. The purpose of the clinical trial was to compare the effects of Xarelto with warfarin, a predecessor blood-thinning drug and was conducted over a 3-year period during which 14,000 patients were reviewed. This clinical trial is now being investigated and questions have emerged about its credibility due to the use of a defective blood testing device. Many believe this device could have altered the results of the data, thus making Xarelto appear more effective than it really was. Researchers have stated that patients may have been given the wrong size dose of warfarin because of the faulty testing apparatus.

In addition to the faulty device, another big issue is the manufacturers’ deceptive and misleading actions not only with not acknowledging the faulty and omitted data to regulatory authorities in the United States and Europe, but also their forwarding of incomplete data to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), a highly respected and trusted publication not only with its readers but those in the medical profession. It is believed that the Journal’s assessment of Xarelto, albeit based on erroneous information given to it by the manufacturers, may have played a role in the FDA’s approval of the drug and its subsequent release into the consumer market.
