Concussion From Slide Tackle Puts Teen’s Brain, Sport, and Learning on Hold
Timmy’s soccer season was cut short by a concussion from a kick to the head during a slide tackle. Even though his mother sought help right away, his vision problems stop him from participating in sports and excelling in school.

Timmy’s day started just like any other day and he was certainly looking forward to another great game playing soccer in his competitive league. Timmy is also a honor student at school and prides himself on his academic achievement. In fact, he comes from an academically talented family as his mom, Kathryn says. There’s five children in the family and she expects them all to do well – on and off the field.
But Timmy’s game that day was cut short. He went for a slide tackle and ended up getting kicked in the face. He thinks he blacked out for a few seconds. When he came to, he experienced mild headache and suffered severe loss of balance. Over time and with the help of professionals he has regained that balance and can still speak well, as his video shows Unlike most, his mother sought help right away. She didn’t waste too much time with total and complete cognitive and physical rest for days on end. That probably saved young Timmy from further damage because action was taken right away.
But there is one thing that still bothers him. His eyesight. He has binocular vision issues. Usually both eyes are working together. This is crucial for attention to detail and also for navigating through the surrounding environment in a smooth and accurate manner. This is possible because of better depth perception and spacial awareness.
Timmy is doing vision therapy right now, but the process has been slow. Since being back at school, his honour roll is in jeopardy. Because he cannot see properly – the words on the page tremble and shake – he cannot read well. Any student of any kind will state that reading is essential for studying and good grades. But Timmy’s reading has been limited and his teachers are impatient with him. IMPATIENT. As though he was doing all this annoy them. They don’t understand that Timmy has a real problem, not a made up one.
On top of that, he has failed the Return-to-Play protocols to play his favorite sports. Life is on hold for this young man.
