Over 50 Navy veterans and their guests, including several who served in World War II, met again as they have for many years for an annual reunion at the Hartford Armory on December 19th. Most at some point in their military careers served in the Hartford Naval Reserve Center, now the Navy Operational Support Center in Plainville.

The guest speaker this year was Colonel Lesbia Nieves, Director of Residential Programs & Services, Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs. She also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard, having entered military service in 1987. Nieves, of Manchester, Connecticut, served in Iraq 2003-2005.

Nieves described the services available from her department and her particular role as the Director of Residential Programs & Services. She fielded numerous questions from the veterans and provided guidance on how to access veteran’s services.

Nieves was the invited guest of Captain Dwight H. Merriam, U.S. Navy, Surface Warfare (retired), who was privileged to introduce her. Mr. Dwight Merriam, the senior officer at the reunion, entered Naval Service in July 1968, and served seven years of active duty including three tours to Viet Nam and duty as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He then served 24 more years in the Naval Reserve with numerous shipboard and shore assignments and two commands, the last as Commanding Officer of the reserve component of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, serving in that capacity through the Gulf War.

Dwight Merriam is a nationally prominent land use planner and lawyer in private practice in Simsbury, Connecticut. www.dwightmerriam.com
