Construction Accident Lawyer Comments On Construction Safety As Council Calls April Death Preventable
May 24, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman recently commented on the need for construction site safety after a growing number of incidents have resulted in serious injury or death of a construction worker.
In April, a 32-year-old man was killed on a construction site in the West Village when a scaffolding plank fell and struck him, sending him to the hospital with severe neck and back injuries. He died later in the hospital. The Building and Construction Trades Council is now stating that the man’s injuries could have been prevented, noting that the site had several open violations. In February, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio attempted to decrease the likelihood of similar incidents by quadrupling penalties for violations, conducting waves of enforcement sweeps and requiring new supervision at construction sites citywide.
These changes are not without cause. The incident involving the death of the 32-year-old man in West Village is only one of many that have been reported in New York City within the past year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state of New York experienced 86 fatalities from construction, natural resources and maintenance occupations in 2014. Twenty-eight of those incidents were because of slips, trips or falls and 24 were because of contact with objects and equipment. Several media outlets have reported that the number of construction-related injuries has steadily increased throughout 2015.
There are several types of construction accidents that affect workers on the job. Among those are scaffolding accidents, slips, trips and falls, and ladder accidents. Common injuries associated with construction accidents include lacerations, broken or fractured bones, spinal injuries and brain injuries.
Mr. Moverman has represented hundreds of victims involved in these accidents and, in some cases, has helped those individuals receive the compensation they deserve. One victim represented by Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman was awarded $2.6 million after he suffered fractured ribs and an injured spine following a fall from defective scaffolding.
