Construction Accident Lawyer Supports Black Box Crane Proposal Following Tribeca Crane Incident

June 18, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman commented on a recent development that shows support for increased regulations, following the February Tribeca crane collapse which left 1 pedestrian dead and several others injured. Moverman stated that this regulation is a key first step in increasing the safety of construction workers in New York City, and encourages more cities across the United States to consider similar measures.

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, a local technical panel has urged the implementation of black boxes on cranes in New York City. This proposal follows the collapse of a 500-foot crane that occurred on February 5th. The proposal calls for the utilization of anemometers which are devices used to measure wind speed which all city cranes would be equipped with. This proposal comes shortly after New York City officials banned the use of cranes at times where wind speeds exceed 20 miles per hour.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency that was created to improve worker health and safety across the United States. They currently have 10 regional offices, along with 90 local area offices, and employ an estimated 2,200 inspectors. However, OSHA is currently responsible for the well-being of over 130 million workers in over 8 million worksites, which translates to each inspector being responsible for the lives of a staggering 59,000 workers.

OSHA, with help from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), concluded that there were 4,821 workers killed while on the job in 2014. Of those nearly 5,000 lives lost, the BLS estimates that 1 out of every 5 workers who perished in 2014 was a construction worker. As was the case in the tragic Tribeca crane collapse, pedestrians have also been killed from construction work accidents.
