Recording educational songs for kids was the last thing on Jarvis Gatlin’s radar until he realized how monotonous it was to memorize some of the material he and his wife were teaching their 3 children.

Jarvis and his wife Lauren have been homeschooling their children, for the last 3 years. They are proud members of a home school community where Lauren tutors a class every Tuesday to help with the review of each subject within the shared curriculum.

While being interviewed, Lauren reflected saying, “After 3 years of homeschooling, our kids were still struggling to memorize certain concepts in grammar, math, science and other subjects. Before the school year, I asked my husband to record a fun, upbeat song to help the kids memorize sentence classification. I had no idea it would be so impactful within our community.”

The song Jarvis recorded helped his kids memorize in one week what had taken almost 3 years with no success. Lauren decided to share the song with her home school community to see if others would benefit in the same way. Within 2 weeks the song had been downloaded almost 2000 times. After 1 month it doubled to 4000. Home schooling families flooded social media with posts about how helpful this song had been for their children. As of today, this song has been downloaded over 8000 times and the number continues to grow daily.

One consistent theme among families that downloaded the song was the request for more. There was clearly a need, but Jarvis works two jobs with long hours and barely gets sleep as it is. To add in recording and mixing songs on a consistent basis would almost certainly cause a strain on his health and his family. The Gatlin’s prayed for guidance and decided to launch a Kick-starter project. In less than 10 days they were able to secure over $1000 in support pledges for the project.

The goal of the Kickstarter is for Jarvis to leave one of his jobs and focus on recording educational music for kids full time. His kids would love him to spend more time at home helping them learn and doing what he loves to do.

Jarvis, now known as “Mr. J” to the kids in their community, shared his thoughts about the Kickstarter saying,”I sat down and wrote out all the expenses we would need covered to make this happen for a full year. When I saw the number I prayed for a miracle. It seems impossible, but we will see if it’s in God’s plan for our family right now. If not, we will still be ok.”
