Dallas Health Insurance Consumers Can Now Order Prescriptions By Mail Order
Amazon’s entry into the mail-order prescription drug market will affect consumers of health insurance in Dallas, TX. The result should be lower costs and improved customer service offerings.
Dallas, United States – October 14, 2019 /PressCable/ —
As the prescription drug market battle heats up, Dallas health insurance consumers get more options to choose from.
With Amazon’s 2018 purchase of PillPack, a mail-delivery prescription service, industry giants CVS and Walgreens are increasingly fighting back to maintain market share. When the deal was announced, their public shares dramatically fell as many healthcare analysts believed the future of prescription drug fulfillment would transition to mail.
Pillpack has faced challenges as CVS and Walgreens are allegedly not fulfilling all pharmacy transfers requested. Typically, if someone would like to switch their pharmacy a written transfer is completed by the consumer and consent is provided. This transfer request is submitted to the existing pharmacy and the customer’s prescriptions would then be filled and provided by the new pharmacy.
Pillpack is now claiming that CVS and Walgreens are illegally denying transfers by calling customers and inquiring if they actually consented while attempting to sell them to their own mail-order offerings. For example, CVS provides a multi-dose packaging option for customers taking several prescriptions and Walgreens offers delivery directly to homes as well.
CVS/Walgreens are claiming they have communicated with many customers that were not aware they had consented to the transfer or had done so inadvertently. Consequently, it is their duty to perform due diligence and minimize any fraud and abuse.
With the prescription drug market valued at over $500 billion a year, it is no surprise that Amazon views this market so optimistically. They believe Pillpack provides the perfect synergy to leverage their expertise in fulfillment and shipping expertise.
So how might this affect consumers of health insurance in Dallas? Simply, more choices and potentially lower overall costs. Prescription drug recipients can evaluate which provider provides the best prices, services, and most convenience. Free shipping also levels the playing field with regard to costs that traditionally had been an advantage to traditional brick and mortar pharmacies.
Rick Thornton, a Dallas health insurance broker, sees another benefit that the competition provides. “My experience has been the more you remove roadblocks to prescription drugs, the more consistent patients take them which leads to better health outcomes. It’s similar to satisfaction with one’s physician resulting in more visits to the doctor. That’s always a net positive.”
It’s difficult to predict who will emerge on top as Amazon takes on the establishment, but it’s clear that prescription drug customers like those in Dallas could ultimately be the winners in the future.
