A Matter of Balance is an 8-week structured class that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

A Matter of Balance instruction will include information and strategies for:

Changing mindset – One of the most important aspects of decreasing fall risk is changing the mindset to understand and manage fear of falling. Studies show that fear of falling often leads to inactivity which in turn leads to an increased risk of falls. As a part of this course, participants will determine what fears they have about falling, which ones are keeping them safe and which ones are increasing their risk. Strategies to change unhealthy or limiting fears will also be taught.

Changing behavior – Another important factor in reducing a person’s risk of falls is changing their behavior. With a proper mindset, participants will learn to act assertively to keep themselves safe and not put themselves at increased risk of falls simply because they do not want to “make waves.” Specific strategies and techniques will be taught and practiced to make it easier for people to make good decisions and stay safe.

Changing environment – Another critical component to decreasing a person’s risk of falling is making sure that their environment is suitable for safe mobility. Participants will participate in training and receive a detailed, step by step, room by room checklist which they can use to make sure their home is safe and doesn’t put them at increased risk of falls. If they see something that needs to be changed, they’ll know how to change it to make their home safer.

When asked about the reasons behind the decision to provide free training on such an in-demand topic, Ron Tester, Physical Therapist and Administrator at Advanced RehabTrust Home Health of Advanced RehabTrust Home Health said,

“I love teaching this course because I know it works! It’s a proven, researched-based way for seniors to improve their mobility while simultaneously improving their safety. We separate fact from fiction when it comes to safe mobility and decreasing risk, then we teach participants to implement everything they learn. Our goal is not just to teach a bunch of stuff but to change lives, to keep people safe and in their homes. That’s what I do one-on-one with people as a physical therapist with Advanced RehabTrust Home Health, and that’s what we do through community education programs such as A Matter of Balance.”
