Doctor Continues Campaign Against Power Morcellation To Prevent Spread Of Uterine Cancer

January 27, 2016 – – Banville Law reports on recent progress made by Doctor Hooman Noorchashm in his very personal battle fight to ban gynecological power morcellation, which he believes can spread uterine cancer. Doctor Noorchashm works as a cardiac surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Pennsylvania. For several years, he has been actively campaigning against power morcellator tools. His passion for ending these procedures was spurred after his wife underwent the procedure herself, and was later diagnosed with advanced uterine sarcoma, a disease which has currently left her fighting for her life.

Since his wife’s debilitating diagnosis, Dr. Noorchashm has regularly challenged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and has written letter after letter to hospitals and doctors offices, physicians, and even Congress addressing what he feels is a serious and deeply pressing problem which could significantly impair the lives of many women across the nation.

Prior to her cancer diagnosis two years ago, Dr. Noorchashm’s wife underwent what doctors believed to be a routine hysterectomy. To complete the procedure, surgeons chose to use a morcellator tool, as it allowed a minimally invasive surgery and faster recovery time. The laparoscopic power morcellator was inserted into her abdominal cavity through several tiny incisions, where it quickly spun jaw-like blades designed to shred apart fibroid tissue pieces so that they can later be removed from the body via suction through a hollow tube on the front of the device.

The doctor and his wife allege, however, as many others do, that as the morcellator performed this procedure, it exposed and disseminated previously hidden cancer cells which were encapsulated within her uterine fibroids. When these sarcoma cells are sealed inside of a fibroid, they are virtually impossible for doctors to detect prior to examining the tissue after surgery.

Through the spreading of these cancer cells, many allege that the tool can create an aggressive, advanced, and widespread cancer. In the case of Dr. Noorchashm’s wife, the cancer cells were significantly spread and more difficult to get to respond to treatment. They believe that if these cells were not spread by the power morcellator device, they would have been much lower grade and more easily treatable.

Today, Dr. Noorchashm and his wife are trying to save other women from making what they consider to be a life-threatening mistake of undergoing gynecological power morcellation. And many others are in agreement. Across the nation, many women have filed their own lawsuits against various brands of morcellator devices alleging very much the same. Several of these lawsuits have been pursued by family members of the victims as the victims have since passed away due to fatal uterine sarcomas, like leiomyosarcoma.

The attorneys at Banville Law are dedicated to helping women who have received a cancer diagnosis after undergoing power morcellation, but who have not yet filed a lawsuit to fully explore their legal options. These women may be entitled to legal action and substantial compensation. Currently, Banville Law is offering complimentary consultations to women affected by this hugely impactful issue.
