Doctors Offer Advice To Reduce Risk Of POP, A Condition At The Center Of Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Filings

April 07, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on advice given to patients in order to help prevent the risk of suffering from pelvic organ prolapse. In a column about preventing pelvic organ prolapse, licensed healthcare professionals recommended changes to lifestyle that can contribute to overall reproductive health and wellness. Professionals suggest preventative measures including quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, seeking treatment for conditions that strain the pelvic floor, such as a chronic cough, and avoiding heavy lifting.

Pelvic organ prolapse is defined as a condition in which the pelvic muscles weaken and are no longer able to support the pelvic organs. The organs can then sag or bulge. According to the article, up to 50 percent of women who have given birth will be diagnosed with some form of pelvic organ prolapse.

The condition is one that is at the center of thousands of lawsuits filed against mesh manufacturers nationwide. The condition is often treated surgically by implanting transvaginal mesh, a device typically made of synthetic polypropylene that is used to support bulging organs in cases of pelvic organ prolapse. They are also used as support for the urethra in cases of stress urinary incontinence. The devices are manufactured by several companies including Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, C.R. Bard, Cook Medical and Coloplast Corp. These companies have been facing allegations that the mesh devices are not only defective and cause severe side effects, but that they were also aware of the defects and continued to market the devices.

Side effects that have been alleged by plaintiffs in these cases include organ perforation, erosion of mesh through the vagina, bleeding, infection, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, severe vaginal or pelvic pain, vaginal scarring and vaginal shrinkage.

Since the FDA noted over 1,000 adverse event reports in 2008, they have issued multiple warnings about the devices, reclassifying them as “high risk.”

Lawsuits continue to accumulate in number and attorneys at Banville Law are working to make sure that those who believe they have suffered from the use of a transvaginal mesh implant are given the chance to explore their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those parties.
