Dr. Matthew Wetmore Celebrates Deaf Awareness Month

September 21, 2018 – – Happy Ears Hearing Center is recognizing one of their providers, Matthew Wetmore, AuD, in Peoria, Arizona, for National Deaf Awareness Month. Dr. Wetmore obtained his doctorate degree in Audiology, after completing undergraduate work in Deaf Education.

Dr. Wetmore earned his Bachelors degree in Education from the Illinois State University prior to attending graduate school for his doctorate in Audiology. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Wetmore worked as a teacher, teaching the deaf and working with children of all ages with different stages of hearing loss.

Dr. Wetmore himself was born with hearing loss. Today, he utilizes a cochlear implant and a hearing aid. His clinical experience ranges from pediatrics to adult patients and he states that he thoroughly enjoys developing relationships with his patients.

“One of my biggest joys in life is in helping my patients to navigate the unique challenges that come along with hearing loss,” says Dr. Wetmore.

Today, Dr. Wetmore works primarily out of the Happy Ears Hearing Center Peoria location helping patients of all ages with hearing loss issues. He states that he is very pleased to be a part of the clinic’s audiology team and is proud to be celebrating National Deaf Awareness Month.

National Deaf Awareness Month is in September every year. More specifically, the last week of the month is considered as National Deaf Awareness Week. This particular week is celebrated every year and ends with an International Day of the Deaf on the last Sunday of the month. National Deaf Awareness Week is celebrated by regional and national associations around the world that help the deaf, such as audiology clinics, as well as local communities, schools, and other organizations.

Dr. Wetmore says that his clinic is pleased to be taking part in this year’s celebration. The clinic provides hearing loss help to patients of all ages and says that this is not the first year that they have taken part in the celebration.

The very first International Day of the Deaf was celebrated in 1958 by the World Federation of the Deaf. This one day was later extended to include an entire week and today, many organizations and facilities spend the entire month of September dedicated towards the needs of the deaf.

The WFD or World Federation of the Deaf is a non-governmental organization that operates on an international level. There are also various national associations that are all recognized by the United Nations that are dedicated to helping the deaf. In all, the WFD is composed of more than 130 national associations and represents more than 75 million deaf people from all over the world.

Many deaf communities recognize the International Deaf Awareness Month. The World Federation has set aside the last week of September as National Deaf Awareness Week, the first of which took place back in the early 1950s. Since then, various other organizations and facilities have joined in and today, International Deaf Awareness Month is celebrated in virtually every country and region in the world by tens of millions of people, many of them professionals in the field of audiology, like Dr. Wetmore.

The purpose of the Deaf Awareness Month is to raise the public’s awareness of deaf issues, the people and their culture. There are a number of activities and events that are planned every year that are all designed to encourage communities and individuals to come together and help celebrate and educate about deaf awareness. There are many clubs, schools, universities, colleges, libraries and other facilities that typically plan events and activities for Deaf Awareness Month. Those interested in learning more can contact their local library, school or government-funded health department to find out about events in their area.

Dr. Wetmore states that he and his clinic are happy to be taking part in National Deaf Awareness Month once again. He says that the clinic is always available to answer questions and schedule appointments as needed. Those who are interested in learning more or those who have questions about Deaf Awareness Month or any of the services provided by Happy Ears Hearing Center, can contact them directly by phone or visit them on their official website.
