The alteration that made them look ‘funny’ or weird was the altered chassis, where the rear axles were moved forward by 15 inches, along with a 10 inch pushing forward of the front wheels. Post 1966, Ford and Mercury were actively making the funny cars with new additions such as front end dragster chassis with fibreglass flip top bodies.
