Driving A Safe Speed Is A Requirement By Law, Local Attorney Says

The co-owner of Fat Guy’s Burgers in Tulsa was killed after attempting to cross a busy interstate on foot after being involved in an earlier collision.

On December 19, 2018, Chris Dodge, the co-owner of Fat Guy’s Burgers in Tulsa, was struck and killed while trying to cross the Inner Dispersal Loop on foot. Dodge, age 41, had exited his vehicle after being involved in a collision and was attempting to cross the IDL when he was hit by another vehicle.

The 2008 Chevrolet Uplander was headed southbound on Interstate 244 and struck Dodge around 10 PM that night. It is unknown what the driver’s condition was at the time of the accident, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation. The Highway Patrol did note that the road was wet at the time of the collision.

Fat Guy’s Burger Bar closed on December 27th so workers could attend the memorial services for Chris Dodge. Dodge was the creative mind behind the menu for Fat Guy’s Burgers, which represents a tremendous loss for the popular Tulsa eatery. Although they are now missing an integral team member, co-owner Mike Meehan said Fat Guy’s Burgers will remain open as that is what Chris Dodge would’ve wanted.

Tulsa auto accident attorney Charles Bryan Alred points out that while the accident is still under investigation, there is a likelihood that the Uplander driver was not driving at a proper speed for the conditions. Alred said, “The road was wet at the time of the accident. Oklahoma law says that any person operating a vehicle on the highway has the duty to operate their vehicle at a safe and prudent speed that is not greater than what is reasonable and proper at the time. This means taking into consideration traffic and weather conditions. If the conditions warrant driving slower than the posted speed limit due to rain, sleet, or snow, then you must drive at slower speed.

“This time of year has the potential to be awful depending on how rough Mother Nature decides to be. Wet and slushy roads and highways combined with debris and falling leaves can create additional hazards on the road. Distracted driving and driver error are two of the major factors in most auto accidents, not just those occurring on Oklahoma roads. Throw in bad weather and wet roads and you have a recipe for disaster. It’s even more important to practice safe driving habits during the winter months.”
