Drug Interactions: A Look At Drugs Not To Be Taken With Xarelto As Lawsuit Filings Grow
October 13, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on dangerous drug interactions for patients taking Xarelto.Certain medications taken with Xarelto can be dangerous and, according to the FDA, should never be taken together.
According to the FDA, there are several medications that should not be taken while on Xarelto. Those medications include: Itraconazole (Sporanox and Onmel), lopinavir (Kaletra), Ritonavir (Norvir), Indinavir (Crixivan), Conivaptan (Vaprisol), Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Epitol, and Teril), Phenytoin (Dilantin), Rifampin (Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane, and Rifadin) and St. John’s wort (Hypericum Perforatum).
Meanwhile, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers of Xarelto, which is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG. Plaintiffs in the cases allege that Xarelto causes adverse side effects including internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhaging, epidural hematoma, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke. Plaintiffs further allege that the companies did not adequately warn consumers about the risk of taking the drug and that, as a result, they have suffered serious health problems and sometimes even death. Those cases against the manufacturers have been consolidated into MDL No. 2592, a multidistrict litigation panel created to more efficiently deal with the number of federally-filed cases. A mass tort program has also been established in Pennsylvania to better manage the 620 cases that have been filed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania thus far.
The drug was introduced in 2011 for prevention of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing knee and hip replacements, atrial fibrillation and for general use in reducing the occurrence of blood clots, and stent thrombosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
“Our lawsuits allege that the manufacturers failed to warn our clients about the severe side effects that our client’s suffered from while taking the drug,” said attorney Laurence Banville, a contributor to the Xarelto litigation updates on TheProductLawyers.com. “We are speaking with families who have had brain bleeds, gastrointestinal bleeds, vaginal bleeding, and bleeding from trauma where hospitalization and extreme measures were taken by medical staff to help save the patient’s life,” Banville continued. “We look forward to fighting for the rights of our clients and pursuing just compensation for the injuries and hospitalization.” For more information about the side effects and how to pursue legal action, contact Banville Law at 888-478-9711.
