OAKLAND, CA–The Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education (CORE) held a free webinar online on Thursday, April 12, 2:00 – 3:30 PM Eastern Time (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Pacific Time) called Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding (K-3). This webinar revealed four recommendations for teaching foundational reading skills to students in kindergarten through 3rd grade and focused on the foundational reading skills that enable students to read words, relate those words to their oral language, and read connected text with sufficient accuracy and fluency to understand what they read.

Dr. Barbara Foorman, the Regional Educational Library Southeast Director ,and Ms. Laurie Lee, the Improving Literacy Research Alliance Manager, led the presentation and say this webinar is a chance for people to hear from industry leaders and acquire resources to support their work teaching the basic skills needed to ensure student comprehension while reading in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Participants were provided an overview of the IES practice guide on foundational reading skills, which highlights the four recommendations for teaching foundational reading skills and includes implementation steps for each recommendation as well as solutions to common obstacles, a summary of the recommendation, and a rating of supporting evidence for each recommendation. Participants were also given professional learning community materials. Both are geared towards teachers, administrators, and other educators who want to improve their students’ foundational reading skills. Viewers of the webinar were able ask questions live and get information not readily available through other channels.
