Emails to a Wayward College Student, a Book for Struggling Students, Announces Launch

The book aims to bridge the gap between parents and their wayward college student

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / April 19, 2016 / In 2014, Neil Giblin was asked by a good friend if he could speak to her son who was facing the travails of being a new college student. Having spent his undergraduate years struggling with many of the same challenges, Neil sent a heartfelt email that spoke from experience; something the student’s parents just couldn’t do.

“My original intention was to send one email, but I warmed to the task, and over the course of the summer I sent nineteen emails,” says Neil.

The emails not only spoke to the young student, but also to his parents, who themselves were facing considerable heartache. “My son and I enjoyed the emails immensely,” says Neil’s friend. “Neil is an engaging writer and storyteller. We were hooked. After the series ended, I suggested that Neil compile the emails into a book so it could be shared with students and the parents of students who find themselves in the same boat we were in.”

It was then that “Emails to a Wayward College Student” was born.

The book was written based on those original 19 emails; and its purpose is to bridge the gap between a struggling college student and his or her concerned and frustrated parents.

In his book, Neil divides college students into one of three distinct categories:

– The Resolute College Student: A student who knows what they want to do with their life after college, and are preparing themselves for that future.
– The Primed College Student: A student who doesn’t necessarily know what they want to do with their life after college, but are actively preparing themselves so that they have options.
– The Wayward College Student: One who has no idea what they want to do with their life after college, and are not preparing for anything.

By first identifying these 3 types of students and their corresponding traits, attitudes, and goals, Neil believes that Wayward college students can become primed college students, and eventually become resolute college students.

In order to offset some of the costs incurred through publication of his book, Neil has taken to Kickstarter, and hopes to raise enough funds to begin the journey of his second book: “Emails to a Wayward College Graduate.”
