In an effort to encourage citizens and business owners in the United States to manage their waste responsibly, the Environmental Protection Agency has introduced the Federal Green Challenge. The challenge focuses on helping people achieve a five percent increase in the amount of recycled material, a five percent increase in the amount of material that is composted, and a five percent decrease in waste generated. The EPA asserts that through reduction of waste, reuse of materials, and recycling or composting, the nation can decrease its negative environmental impact.

This challenge was inspired by several case studies indicating the benefits of large corporations’ waste reduction efforts. The U.S. Navy’s Naval Station, for example, increased its amount of recycled materials by over 110 percent through the introduction of a campaign involving composting and reuse. They also made recycling bins more accessible to promote daily recycling habits.

Moreover, in 2008, the U.S. Postal Service Western Areas saved the region $44 million through the reuse and redistribution of materials and equipment. This effort also diverted 35,000 tons of waste from landfills. Another story showcasing the relevance of this effort is from the Chicago field office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The USPS also aided these efforts through cold composting, which involves leaving recently mowed grass on the lawn to compost and act as a fertilizer instead of being diverted to a landfill. Its efforts kept 320 tons of waste from the landfill.
