Statistics on poverty show that women are far more likely to be affected than men, and in developing countries like Peru, where poverty is widespread, many women struggle to provide basic needs for themselves and their families. Due to traditional perceptions of women’s roles, they may find that many types of employment are barred to them. One travel company is changing that picture, however. Evolution Treks Peru is a worker-owned travel company that now features tours that are led by and staffed by local women.

Miguel Gongora, the company spokesperson said “Research bears out that one of the best ways to reduce poverty is to bring women into the workforce, and that’s why we started working with the women’s collective in Ccorcor. These women are native Quechua speakers who were born and raised in the areas where we work, so they know the region well. They assist us as porters, meaning that they help to carry cooking equipment or camping gear when we hike to the Huchuy Qosqo archaeological site. We’re proud to say that they’re the first women in Peru to work as porters.”

He went on to explain that the women are paid a salary that is average to above average for the region; moreover, 30% of the profits for each trip go to the women’s collective. That money will go toward building a guest house for tourists that the women in the group will manage. The profits from that business will then be invested in health care, education, and other projects that will benefit the community and improve their quality of life.

Not only does Evolution Treks Peru employ an all-female staff of porters, they also use female tour guides to lead the Huchuy Qosqo excursions. All tour leaders are experienced, bilingual professionals who are well-versed in the history, culture, and wildlife of the region.

The treks to Huchuy Qosqo operate all year round, and they include two days of hiking and one night of camping under the stars. Tents, sleeping pads, meals, and tickets to the Inkarri Museum are all provided by the company. Concluded Gongora, “We pride ourselves on running an ethical, sustainable, and empowering business that makes a positive contribution to the communities where we work. Not only that, our tours offer a unique experience to travelers, and we look forward to introducing more people from around the globe to this beautiful and historic area.”
