Family Escapes Fire Caused By E-Cigarette Explosions As U.S. E-Cig Lawsuit Filings Grow

The Daily Mail reported on the incident, indicating that the fire began when a 15-year-old boy’s e-cigarette exploded while it was charging. The boy managed to alert his older brother and parents, who all escaped safely, according to the article. The fire caused significant damage to the home, gutting the bedroom and leaving severe smoke damage to the upstairs.

Meanwhile, similar cases have begun to accumulate in the U.S. One such reported incident involved a woman living in Atlanta who had plugged in her e-cigarette device to charge when it exploded in her living room. The explosion sent flames shooting across the room and resulted in a burned couch and rug.

According to FEMA, 25 incidents involving e-cigarette explosions have been reported by mainstream media between 2009 and 2014. In 80 percent of reported cases, the explosions have happened while the devices were charging. When the devices charge, the lithium ion battery sometimes overheats, causing the e-cigarette to explode and pieces of the device to become projectile. In the explosions, users and others can sometimes be injured by flames, hot liquid or shrapnel.
