Fans Rave About This Year’s Les Miserables and Say It’s as Good as the Original
In 2006, producers came out with a revival of the classic Les Miserables, and it was a failure. But this year’s effort is being met with great enthusiasm.
New York, NY, USA – April 2, 2015 /PressCable/ —
In 2006, the revival of Les Miserables was met with lukewarm enthusiasm. It is, after all, one of the greats as far as classics go. But this year’s revival of the dark, revolutionary play is catching the attention of critics and theatre buffs alike. TheatreTicketBank.com, a secondary market ticket seller that specializes in hard to find and sold out seats, says that fans may be surprised at this year’s performance, but they will definitely not be disappointed.
When Les Miserables was first taken from novel to musical, it ran for sixteen years on Broadway. And after the mediocre 2006 performance, it was thought that the original performance would never be surpassed. But the current performance took theatrical risks, and they seem to be paying off.
The story hasn’t changed, of course. The musical tells a tale of Jean Valiean, who steals a loaf of bread and is sentenced to an unjust nineteen years for the crime. Ramin Karimloo plays the part and is said to play it with great conviction. Inspector Javert, who is in pursuit of the fugitive Valiean, comes across as a fanatical character who has vowed to chase down Valiean, even if it takes him the rest of his life. Javert is fiendishly played to perfection by Will Swenson.
Adding to the dark tale is a list of martyrs that suffer and die for righteous causes. Like Fantine, played by Caissie Levy, who dies on behalf of all the women who are forced to sell their bodies just to survive the streets. And there’s Eponine, who is played by Nikki James. She suffers grandly because she loves Marius, but that love is not returned. Then she dies in a street battle while trying to save his life. And children suffer too in Les Miserables when thieves take advantage of them.
With all of this suffering and darkness, the musical could be easily overwhelmed by it. But in the deft hands of the directors, James Powell and Laurence Conner, the heroic actions of the characters overshadow the dark intensity that the production is so well known for.
The directors took great liberties with the set too. Rather than an ornate set, they instead chose to limit the palette to grays and blacks, with only one other color the entire time: a red flag that the rebels carry together to the barricade. The overall feel of the production is of darkness and depression, but the epic style story somehow makes up for it all.
TheatreTicketBank recommends that fans who want to see Les Miserables in the historic Imperial Theater, get their Les Miserables tickets early because while there may be another revival of the great classic at some time in the future, chances are, it won’t be nearly as memorable as this one.
