FDA Drug Safety Communication Gives Invokana Lawsuit Filers Additional Data About Existing Concerns

April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on concerns regarding the type 2 diabetes drug Invokana, a member of the new generation SGLT2 inhibitor class. Approved in 2013 by the FDA, Invokana has been an ongoing subject of lawsuits connecting it with patient health problems including kidney failure and cardiovascular damage.

To lower blood glucose (sugar) in type 2 diabetes patients, Invokana forces the kidneys to eliminate glucose from the blood through urination. The stress on the kidneys from this change in process means patients with preexisting kidney problems need to be aware of the potential risks.

In one lawsuit, filed in Southern Alabama District Court in December, 2015, the plaintiff states that she had used Invokana without being made aware of these and other side effects emphasized in an FDA bulletin initially issued in May of 2015. She filed the lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Invokana and a division of Johnson & Johnson. After only a short time using the drug, the plaintiff experienced sudden onset diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition is potentially life-threatening, as too much toxic acid accumulates in the bloodstream.

The defendant, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, showed negligence since they did not ensure that both the public and the medical community were better aware of the serious risks involved with Invokana, she claims. She also notes that it was controversially promoted by Janssen for “off label,” or unapproved use for type 1 diabetes, the type that she is diagnosed with.
